TANGMAI FESTIVAL 2026: THE FRUIT OF THE LAND, THE LABOUR OF FARMERS AND THE LIVING CULTURE OF THE ZOMI PEOPLE

The ninth Tangmai Festival brought farmers, cultural organisations, artists, community leaders, young people and families together for a colourful celebration of agriculture, identity, music and Zomi unity.
Organized by the Young Paite Association General Headquarters (YPA GHQs), the festival placed Tangmai—the locally cultivated cucumber—at the centre of agricultural education, traditional attire, cultural performances, communal feasting and contemporary Zomi music.
Tangmai is much more than a cucumber feast. It represents:

📷 The labour and dignity of hill farmers
📷 Fellowship among related Zomi/Zo communities
📷 Traditional attire, weaving and craftsmanship
📷 Cultural music and contemporary Zomi creativity
📷 The transmission of identity to younger generations
The Tangmai Festival is Paite-founded and YPA-led. This foundation must always be faithfully acknowledged. At the same time, the participation of different cultural organisations has allowed the celebration to become an inclusive platform for the wider Zomi/Zo family.
📷 A MODERN FESTIVAL ROOTED IN OLDER AGRICULTURAL LIFE
The first documented Tangmai Festival was organised at the YPA Hall in Hiangtam in 2018. More than 6,000 cucumbers were reportedly collected, consumed or sold.
The festival continued to grow:
📷 2019: About 10,000 cucumbers and 27 participating farmers
📷 2022: Approximately 14,000 cucumbers collected
📷 2023–2024: Public celebrations interrupted amid the Manipur conflict
📷 2025: More than 7,000 cucumbers sourced, particularly from Lungthul and Kaihlam
📷 2026: The ninth edition celebrated under the theme “Unity through Culture and Tradition”
The festival may be modern, but it grows from the Zomi people’s much older relationship with the land, seasonal agriculture, community sharing and locally cultivated food.
📷 FARMERS AT THE HEART OF TANGMAI
The real foundation of the festival is the farmer.
Cucumbers were gathered from remote farming communities, transported to Lamka, washed, sliced and shared with the public. Whole cucumbers were also made available at subsidised or nominal prices.
The festival gives public visibility to farmers whose labour is often overlooked. It also creates an important connection between Lamka and the interior villages whose land and agricultural knowledge sustain the celebration.
Community publicity surrounding the 2026 festival referred to more than 20,000 cucumbers. However, a verified final count, total weight, market value, and number of participating farmers had not yet been publicly released at the time of reporting.
Publishing these figures would help demonstrate the festival’s economic contribution to farmers and strengthen the case for greater recognition and institutional support.
📷 UNITY EXPRESSED THROUGH CULTURE
The official programme announced cultural participation by organisations associated with the Young Mizo Association, Young Vaiphei Association, Zou Youth Organisation, Hmar Youth Association, Kuki Khanglai Lompi and Paite Cultural Society.
The traditional-dress presentation, cultural dances, music and community performances showed that unity does not require cultural uniformity. Each participating group could present its own artistic inheritance while contributing to a shared celebration.
Traditional attire is more than festival decoration. Its colours, patterns, weaving methods and designs preserve knowledge about identity, craftsmanship, memory and belonging.

The celebration continued at Phungkhothang Guite Mawltual with the Tangmai Music Fest.

The announced local lineup included Kimcy, Sangi, Kim Paite, Mawipi, Shalomi, Thanngaih, Nunhoih, Nunmawi Dousel and Rhythmic Zomi.
Rigvedazz, Six String and Zonam Rabbi were among the featured bands and musicians, while Paite Zai-awi Pawl also played an important role in the festival programme.
The concert connected Lamka with Mizoram, provided a major platform for Zomi artists and encouraged younger generations to participate in an agricultural and cultural celebration.
A living culture preserves the inheritance of earlier generations—but it also gives today’s generation room to create.
📷 NUTRITIONAL AND HEALTH IMPORTANCE OF TANGMAI
Tangmai also has genuine nutritional value.
Fresh cucumber is approximately 95 percent water. It is naturally low in calories, fat, and sodium, making it refreshing during hot weather and physical work.
Tangmai contributes:

📷 A low-calorie whole-food option
📷 Fibre, especially when safely eaten with the peel
📷 Vitamin K, which supports normal blood clotting and bone health
📷 Potassium for normal muscle, nerve and fluid-balance functions

This helps explain why cucumber has traditionally been valued by farmers working under the hot sun. Its water content and freshness make it especially suitable for community feasts and warm-weather gatherings.
Tangmai should be washed with safe running water before cutting. Clean hands, knives and serving surfaces are particularly important when preparing large quantities for public distribution.
📷 WHY TANGMAI DESERVES GREATER RECOGNITION
Tangmai has not yet been publicly confirmed as an officially designated state-level festival. Nevertheless, it has built a compelling case for recognition and sustained support.

Tangmai’s future development should include a formal farmer registry, verified procurement records, an annual festival report, cucumber and seed exhibitions, farmer awards, school participation, agricultural training, responsible tourism and environmentally sustainable waste management.
Public agencies and sponsors should support the festival while respecting its community ownership, Paite Foundation and YPA leadership.

📷 BREAKING NEWS | ICC REMOVES CHIEF PROSECUTOR KARIM KHAN
The International Criminal Court’s member states have removed Chief Prosecutor Karim A. A. Khan from office following disciplinary proceedings connected to sexual-misconduct allegations involving a woman who worked under his authority.
The historic decision was adopted on July 24, 2026, during a special session of the ICC’s Assembly of States Parties in New York. It is the first removal of a serving chief prosecutor in the court’s history.
According to published reports, 82 states voted for Khan’s removal, while 13 voted against and 11 abstained. The Assembly concluded that he had committed “serious misconduct” and a “serious breach of duty” under Article 46 of the Rome Statute.
Khan has consistently denied the allegations. His legal team maintains that the proceedings were unfair and has indicated that he intends to challenge the decision.

Khan’s removal was an institutional disciplinary action—not a criminal conviction. He has not been reported as convicted of sexual assault or another criminal offence arising from the allegations.

Deputy Prosecutors Nazhat Shameem Khan and Mame Mandiaye Niang will continue managing the Office of the Prosecutor during the leadership transition. Khan’s removal does not automatically cancel the ICC’s existing investigations, applications or arrest warrants.
The ICC must now do more than replace one prosecutor. It must rebuild trust, protect employees, clarify its disciplinary procedures and demonstrate that neither misconduct nor political influence will control international justice.

📷 ZOMI NATIONAL CONFERENCE–EUROPE 2026 UNITES COMMUNITIES IN FAITH, CULTURE AND FELLOWSHIP
MARIAGER, Denmark — Europe Zomi Khawmpi 2026 concluded successfully following six days of Christian worship, biblical teaching, cultural celebration, music, sports and community fellowship.
Held from July 21–26, 2026, in Mariager, Denmark, the conference brought together approximately 250 Zomi participants from communities across Europe.
Organized under the theme “Topa Kiangah Ciahkik Ni” — “Let Us Return to the Lord,” based on Hosea 6:1, the gathering focused on spiritual renewal while strengthening Zomi unity, identity, and cooperation throughout Europe.
Evangelist D. S. Lalpu and Pastor Joseph Suumpi, visiting from the United States, and Dr. CS Khai served as the principal speakers. Morning prayers, devotional sessions, biblical seminars, combined worship and evening revival services encouraged participants toward repentance, spiritual restoration and faithful Christian living.
The conference also featured:

Participants expressed special appreciation to the Denmark Zomi community for its generosity, patience and hospitality. Organizers, elders, ministry leaders and volunteers were also recognized for their unity, careful preparation and tireless service throughout the conference.
A post-conference evaluation identified three important priorities for the future of Zomi communities in Europe:
📷 Strengthening spiritual formation and Christian leadership
📷 Expanding social, sports, and youth-development programs
📷 Preserving Zomi language and literature among younger generations
The gathering emphasized that learning the languages of European countries is necessary and beneficial, but successful integration should not result in the loss of the Zomi mother tongue, heritage or identity.
Parents, churches, educators and community leaders were encouraged to help Zomi children and young people speak, read and write their ancestral language while remaining firmly grounded in their Christian faith and cultural heritage.
The next Zomi National Conference–Europe is anticipated to take place in Germany in July 2028. Further information concerning its venue, leadership, and program is expected to be announced by the organizers later.
Europe Zomi Khawmpi 2026 demonstrated the strength of bringing Christian faith, Zomi culture, youth participation and intergenerational fellowship together. Participants returned to their respective countries with gratitude to God and renewed hope for the future of Zomi communities across Europe.

Thang Ho and Lian Do: The Legendary Zomi Brothers Remembered Through the Red and Yellow Bonded Birds

For generations, the story of Thang Ho and Lian Do has been treasured in Zomi oral tradition as one of the most enduring examples of brotherly love, loyalty, generosity, forgiveness, and unity. More than a simple folktale, the legend reflects the moral values that have shaped Zomi society for centuries and continues to inspire new generations today.

Like many ancient oral traditions, the story has been preserved through storytelling rather than written records. As a result, certain details vary among regions, clans, and storytellers. Nevertheless, its central message remains remarkably consistent: true brotherhood is marked by love, sacrifice, faithfulness, and a willingness to share even in times of hardship.

Two Brothers Left to Survive
According to many versions of the tradition, Thang Ho, the elder brother, and Lian Do, the younger brother, lost their father while they were still young. After their father’s death, their mother remarried, and the boys were eventually left to survive on their own.

From an early age, they endured rejection, poverty, hunger, and uncertainty. Yet despite every hardship, the two brothers never abandoned one another.

Thang Ho faithfully protected and guided his younger brother, while Lian Do trusted and remained devoted to his elder sibling. Their unwavering relationship became a lasting model of unau ki-itna—brotherly love and mutual faithfulness.

Sharing Even the Smallest Grain
One of the most memorable scenes in the legend illustrates the brothers’ extraordinary generosity.

Having little food of their own, they survived by gathering scattered grains left behind in harvested fields. Even when they found only a single grain, neither brother was willing to eat without sharing it with the other.

Their actions reflected a timeless Zomi moral principle: true prosperity begins with generosity rather than abundance.

The greatness of Thang Ho and Lian Do was not measured by wealth or status. Instead, it was revealed during the season when they possessed almost nothing yet refused to become selfish.

Compassion That Brought Blessing
Another cherished episode tells how the brothers showed kindness to an elderly woman whom others had overlooked.

Although they themselves had very little, they welcomed her with compassion and shared what they had.

According to the tradition, this act of mercy became a turning point in their lives. Their fields became fruitful, their livestock multiplied, and their circumstances gradually changed from poverty to abundance.

Yet prosperity never changed their character. They remained humble, generous, and devoted to one another, becoming remembered not simply for their wealth but for their compassion and integrity.

Mercy Toward the Mother Who Left Them
Many retellings also describe how their mother eventually returned after hearing that her sons had become prosperous.

Rather than seeking revenge or holding onto bitterness, the brothers welcomed her with kindness and forgiveness.

Their response demonstrated one of the legend’s most powerful lessons: mercy is greater than resentment, and forgiveness is stronger than revenge.

Remembered Through the Red and Yellow Bonded Birds
In the poetic conclusion of the legend, Thang Ho and Lian Do came to be remembered through two colorful birds that were always seen together.

ZOMI WOMAN ACHIEVES INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC MILESTONE IN WORSHIP STUDIES

Congratulations to Man Zen Niiang, co-founder of Grace Music Institute (GMI), Yangon, for earning the Advanced Graduate Certificate of Worship Studies from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies (IWS) in Jacksonville, Florida, USA.
Together with her husband, Pastor David Suum, a doctoral holder in Music, Man Zen Niiang has dedicated her life to worship education, music ministry, and the advancement of Christian leadership in Myanmar. Through GMI, they have trained and equipped countless worship leaders, musicians, and ministry workers.
Beyond music education, Man Zen Niiang is also recognized for her ministry through traditional Burmese dance, creatively integrating Myanmar cultural expressions with Gospel-centered outreach to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.
The certificate recognizes the completion of all academic coursework required for the Doctor of Worship Studies (DWS) program, except for the thesis component. Her achievement reflects years of faithful ministry, academic excellence, and dedication to worship renewal.
In a statement of gratitude, she shared:
"I am deeply grateful for your prayerful support and encouragement. Your faithful prayers have sustained and strengthened me throughout this academic and ministry journey."

Balancing Security, Protection, and Human Dignity
Can Malaysia strengthen national security while protecting refugees and respecting human dignity?

YANGON, Myanmar — Zomi Innkuan Yangon (ZIY) has officially announced its newly formed Advisory Board and Organizing Committee for the 2026–2027 term, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening unity, cooperation, and community development among Zomi people living in Yangon and beyond.

The announcement comes as the organization seeks to build upon its longstanding mission of fostering fellowship, mutual support, and collective advancement within the Zomi community. According to the organization, the newly appointed leadership team will guide ZIY’s activities and strategic direction over the next two years.

In its vision statement, ZIY emphasized the importance of unity among all Zomi people regardless of social, denominational, or organizational backgrounds. The organization expressed its desire to see the Zomi community move forward together as one family, working collectively toward a stronger, more prosperous, and harmonious future.

Zomi Organizations Unite in Yangon
A meaningful and encouraging leadership fellowship gathering was successfully held in Yangon on June 18, 2026, under the leadership of Zomi Innkuan Yangon (ZIY).
The event brought together approximately 34 leaders and representatives from various Zomi organizations, churches, social groups, and community associations across Yangon. Participants gathered in a spirit of fellowship, dialogue, and cooperation to discuss ways of strengthening unity and advancing the collective welfare of the Zomi community.
The gathering was guided by the motto:
"Luangkhawm! Semkhawm! Zuunkhawm!"
(Gather Together • Think Together • Work Together)
During the program, ZIY presented its vision and mission, emphasizing stronger cooperation among Zomi organizations, deeper community relationships, and collective efforts for the benefit of future generations.
