After forcing Hungary’s democratically elected President out of office before the end of his term, Péter Magyar’s government has now found its puppet candidate to replace him.

His record is remarkable.

After the fall of Communism, Hungarian courts convicted a former Communist officer over the 1956 Tata shooting, in which his unit opened fire on civilians during the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution. The case later reached the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, which ruled against Hungary. The issue was not whether the officer had committed the acts, but whether they qualified as a crime against humanity and were therefore exempt from the statute of limitations. The Strasbourg court concluded that they did not and that the offence was therefore time-barred. The current presidential candidate was one of the Strasbourg judges who took that position.

Then came 2006. Hungarians protesting against the country’s liberal-socialist government were subjected to a brutal police crackdown: protesters were beaten, shot with rubber bullets and seriously injured. The current presidential candidate later ruled against one of the victims of that police violence.

But perhaps the greatest irony concerns his own career. He was President of Hungary’s Supreme Court when, as part of a judicial reform, the Supreme Court was reorganised and replaced by the Curia, bringing his term to an early end. He took Hungary to the European Court of Human Rights over the premature termination of his mandate — and won. He argued that cutting short the fixed term of a senior constitutional officeholder was unacceptable and unlawful.

Now he is willing to become President by taking the place of a man whose own fixed presidential term was unlawfully cut short.

A fitting candidate for an illegitimate presidency.

One side contributes to humanity. The other side contributes body counts and conspiracy theories.

Today, the President of Hungary released a dramatic video message announcing that the democratic rule of law in Hungary has come to an end because he was unlawfully removed from office. Nothing like this has happened in modern European history.

A puppet will now be installed in his place, but that person’s mandate will be illegitimate from the very beginning. At the same time, the governing parties have barred their political opponents from standing in future elections.

These are the very people who spent decades calling Viktor Orbán a dictator. Yet the moment they won a democratic election, they turned against both him and democracy itself. They did not act on their own. They did it with the support and at the direction of Brussels.

The European Union is increasingly behaving like a liberal authoritarian empire, determined to tell people what they may say, what they must do, and even whom they are allowed to vote for.

No person who truly values freedom can accept this.

Nem ismerjük el az 1949. évi kommunista alkotmányt, mert egy zsarnoki uralom alapja volt, ezért kinyilvánítjuk érvénytelenségét.

Egyetértünk az első szabad Országgyűlés képviselőivel, akik első határozatukban kimondták, hogy mai szabadságunk az 1956-os forradalmunkból sarjadt ki.

Hazánk 1944. március tizenkilencedikén elveszített állami önrendelkezésének visszaálltát

1990. május másodikától, az első szabadon választott népképviselet megalakulásától számítjuk. Ezt a napot tekintjük hazánk új demokráciája és alkotmányos rendje kezdetének.

Valljuk, hogy a huszadik század erkölcsi megrendüléshez vezető évtizedei után múlhatatlanul szükségünk van a lelki és szellemi megújulásra.

- The Fidesz government had manoeuvred Hungary onto the winning side of the emerging world order, alongside the US, China and Russia.
- The new government will pull Hungary back into the imploding EU at the very moment it falls apart and the emerging world order solidifies.
- This is terrible for Europe because Hungary could have been the “stepping stone” to re-enter the world order; this is what many of us were working on.
- The vulgar “Jacobinism” that is now emerging in Budapest risks becoming embedded and totalitarian because the effects of this bad strategic move will become obvious within weeks as first fuel runs out and then later Europe has food shortages.
