🌧️ ⚠️ PROBABLE FLASH FLOOD RISK ALERT – 2ND DEKAD OF JULY 2026 (11–20 JULY)
📍 NiMet Advisory | Stay Weather-Smart, Stay Ahead
🌧️ Heavy rainfall observed across many parts of Nigeria during the first 10 days of July has left the soils highly saturated. As a result, the ground has minimal capacity to absorb further moisture, thereby increasing the risk of rapid surface runoff in the second dekad.
⚠️ Consequently, with continued rainfall during the second dekad, increased surface runoff may heighten the risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying, coastal communities and poorly drained areas.
⚠️ States likely to be affected include:
📍 Bauchi 📍 Jigawa 📍 Taraba 📍 Adamawa 📍 Benue 📍 Nasarawa 📍 Plateau 📍 Kwara 📍 Kogi 📍 FCT 📍 Oyo 📍 Ogun 📍 Lagos 📍 Osun 📍 Ekiti 📍 Ondo 📍 Edo 📍 Delta 📍 Abia 📍 Imo 📍 Ebonyi 📍 Enugu 📍 Akwa Ibom 📍 Cross River 📍 Rivers 📍 Bayelsa
⚠️ Possible Impacts
•🌊 Localized flash flooding in flood-prone, low-lying, and coastal areas.
•🚗 Traffic congestion, road closures, and transport disruptions.
•⚡ Temporary interruptions to electricity and telecommunications.
•🌧️ Poor visibility during heavy rainfall affects motorists and aviation operations.
•🌾 Waterlogging of farmlands, with possible crop damage.
•🛣️ Damage to roads, bridges, drainage systems, and other infrastructure.
•🦠 Increased risk of waterborne diseases due to stagnant floodwaters.
✅ Safety Advisory
•📡 Follow weather forecasts and flood alerts issued by NiMet.
•🏠 Secure loose outdoor items and reinforce vulnerable structures.
•🚨 Emergency management agencies and community leaders should remain prepared to respond where needed.
•📢 Communities should stay informed and follow flood safety guidance.
•🧹 Keep drains and waterways free from refuse to allow water to flow freely.
•🚫 Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
•📢 Early preparedness and timely action remain essential in reducing the impacts of flash flooding.
🗣️"An informed community is a prepared community. Know the risks. Act early."
