A heavily-armed North Korean infiltrator was killed near the Demilitarized Zone in October 1995.

The man was spotted at approximately 2:20am local time on October 17th near the Freedom Bridge which crosses the Imjin River. Two sentries saw a man in a wetsuit climbing the banks of the river, which was nearly at high tide. They shot him when he raised his arms as if to throw a grenade in their direction.

The North Korean was carrying South Korean military uniforms, two automatic rifles, two handguns, a grenade, food supplies and medicine, leading authorities to believe he was accompanied by at least one other man. The South Korean government put thousands of troops on immediate alert and set up 850 roadblocks in the region to search for another suspected infiltrator. However, no one else was found, leading them to believe someone else may have escaped back across the Imjin River undetected.

This was one of just dozens of incidents which occurred over the years following the end of hostilities in 1953. South Korean forces are constantly on alert for North Korean covert activities, which have included submersibles, fishing vessels, individual swimmers, and fake defectors.

Just one week after this shooting, two other spies were involved in a shootout which killed two South Korean police officers in the Buyeo Armed Spy Incident on October 24th, 1995.

Comando Vermelho tries to invade militia territory in Rio’s West Zone; police respond

More than ten men in uniform and armed with rifles got out of a van in Guaratiba, western Rio de Janeiro, in an attempted invasion linked to the Comando Vermelho (CV). Security camera footage shows the group jumping a fence and entering a wooded area controlled by the local militia.

Military Police were called to the scene but found only the abandoned van, which had been stolen hours earlier. The suspects managed to flee.
