Wesley Snipes' performance was so convincing it reportedly helped him land his breakout role in New Jack City.

The film was shot in late 1986, primarily at the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station in Brooklyn, New York. Scorsese sought to maximize visual impact, drawing inspiration from West Side Story for the subway choreography.

The iconic short film premiered on MTV on this day in 1983. Ot became the first video by a Black artist to receive heavy rotation on the network, breaking racial barriers and propelling the Thriller album, with a shift that helped the network transition into a global cultural powerhouse and cemented MJ as a global superstar

The short film introduced the famous light-up sidewalk tiles that illuminated under MJ’s feet, as well as his signature "toe stand" and spinning moves, MJ’s outfit—a black leather suit, pink shirt, and red bow tie-became an instant fashion trend worldwide

Director Steve Barron recalled that the camera eyepiece literally steamed up from his own body heat due to the intensity of MJ’s instinctive, unrehearsed performance during the chorus. MJ insisted on filming in 35mm film rather than videotape to achieve a high-quality, cinematic look.
