COVER STORY: Faye Webster - Hiding in Plain Sight
Webster is something of a cultural paradox. Her music has seen TikTok virality, but she doesn’t have her own account. She has nearly a million more Spotify monthly listeners than Grammy winners boygenius, but half as many Instagram followers. She's classifiably an indie folk artist, but runs in Atlanta hip-hop circles.
It all makes her rather hard to pin down. But as Consequence's latest cover story reveals, that suits her just fine. In fact, she prefers hiding herself in plain sight. Instead, she lets her music do most of the talking.
"The recording process for me is [all about] first impressions," she says, and the sentiment could't have been more true for Underdressed at the Symphony. The bedrock of the project is a sort of creative impulsivity, with many second or third takes ultimately making the album. "One of the rules we have is to record everything, even our first take. Because we always mess up, but then it's like, 'Oh, we really like that.'"
