A 24-year-old Polish tennis player arrived in Paris last week ranked 114th in the world, with no sponsors, no guaranteed income, and no certainty she could even pay for her hotel room.
She had to win three qualifying matches just to enter the French Open main draw. Prize money is only paid at the end of the tournament, so a Polish sports drink brand quietly stepped in and covered her hotel bill.
Her name is Maja Chwalinska. And today, she plays in the French Open final.
Before this tournament, she had won exactly one Grand Slam main draw match in her entire career. She had battled depression so severe that in 2021 she couldn't get out of bed. She underwent knee surgery in 2022. She spent years grinding through small tournaments across Europe just to stay afloat.
Then she arrived in Paris, won three qualifiers, and kept winning. Zheng Qinwen. Elise Mertens. Maria Sakkari. Diana Shnaider. Nine straight matches. One set dropped.
She is now the first qualifier in French Open history to reach the final. The last time a qualifier reached a Grand Slam final, it was Emma Raducanu at the 2021 US Open. Raducanu won.
By simply making the final, Chwalinska has earned more prize money than her entire career combined. The runner-up cheque alone is $1.6 million. If she wins today, she takes home $3.25 million.
One week ago she couldn't pay for her hotel room.

You blocked me and also ensured that you spread venom in my name such that I don’t quote you.🙌🏻
Use someone else to spread you agendas! Not with me🤝🤝
You may be a new MP but you are not ignorant at all about the Parliamentary practices. When Parliament is not in session, any MP who is present in Delhi may pay floral tributes to the iconic personalities on their anniversaries at Samvidhan Sadan, otherwise MPs can pay tributes at any convenient location. Parliament officials and some BJP Ex-MPs were present today at Samvidhan Sadan. Politics 24×7 is toxic. We didn't do politics by questioning the absence of Congress & TMC Members.
Few days ago- dear Riju Datta of TMC had thrown me a challenge
“If BJP wins Bengal i won’t come on tv debates and if BJP doesn’t cross 100 then Shehzad should not come”
Much like Derek’s arrogant challenge isn’t it Time to implement this challenge too?
RT so many times that it reaches Riju Datta

That’s true. All those mullah doctors/engineers/dentists caught by the ATS in all these years, including the doctors from Al-Falah University who carried out the Red Fort blast and the Muslim techies from #TCS who used their job to prey on Hindu women are great examples of that bigotry! And so are YOU @_sayema
WHAT TIES NIDA KHAN AND DR SHAHEEN TOGETHER?
Three names one question: are we witnessing not just radicalisation among Muslim women, but a gendered counter current?
For decades, the story of “white-collar radicalisation” has been overwhelmingly male. But the emergence of Nida Khan (TCS HR executive) and Dr Shaheen Shahid (Red Fort Al-falah medical college professor) hints at something deeper: ideological assertion. A kind of resistance to transition? As women within Muslim society negotiate modernity, rights and reform, is there a parallel pull in the opposite direction? Have some educated women become active defenders of orthodoxy? Remember the pro-Hijab lobbyists among Muslim women in the aftermath of the Karnataka HC upholding the ban on the wearing of the vestment in classrooms? In Kashmir, the rise of Asiya Andrabi is another classic example. History shows that moments of social churn often produce unlikely standard-bearers of resistance. Women, in such contexts, do not always align with reform. They can also become its most effective counter mobilizers.
