“catalina” is dedicated to my late older sister. She was murdered at age 18—a victim of domestic violence. She was a light. And not a day passes without her on my mind, her laughter in my ear. May her memory be a blessing. https://t.co/Mw6eOMUM1a
“The Shadow” 2nd single from my debut LP SONOROUS PRESENT out now, featuring #GRAMMY winner Quetzal Flores & Roger Reeves (@Guggenheim@CGUTuftsAwards@griffinpoetry). I am also happy to share an intimate documentary portrait of the making-of the album: https://t.co/wGESYwywBr
The album also features luminaries from the worlds of traditional Mexican son, jazz, & R&B—including, @marthartivista (2022 @macfound) @aloeblacc (2015 #Grammy nominee), & Ramón Gutiérrez (of Son de Madera).
This artistic statement marks a crucial moment in my career, as I fully integrate my work, songcraft, & voice to reimagine the creative horizons of what a studio album can sound like & the multi-modal forms scholarship can take, while exploring the sonorous politics of borders.
This album was realized in collaboration with #Grammy Award-winning producer Quetzal Flores. Dynamic explorations of Mexican Regional & Latin American sounds & traditions are deepened by avant jazz arrangements & ethnographic field recordings, alongside the poetry of Roger Reeves
