New lab paper @NeuroCellPress!
@_Aaron_McKnight asked a simple question:
Do calories look the same to hunger neurons in the brain? The answer is no.
Fructose and glucose contain the same calories, but they engage fundamentally different gut-brain pathways.

🚨 Exciting New Research Alert! 🚨 Our latest study, published in #NatureMetabolism, reveals how memory circuits in the brain drive intake of fats and sugars and impact body weight. 🍫🍟 Let’s break it down! 🧵
If you happen to be @SSIBsociety in Chicago, Misgana will be presenting this work today at 4:15 pm, where she combined chemogenetics with taste reactivity assays to measure aversion elicited by hindbrain GLP1R circuits.
Today in @Nature--
@MonellSc researchers, led by @AmberAlhadeff, share new findings that point towards a possible way to reduce adverse side effects of popular next-generation obesity medications like GLP1-based drugs, known as semaglutide and marketed as Ozempic® and Wegovy®
One major side effect of Ozempic (and related drugs) is nausea, to the point where it is not clear whether nausea itself contributes to the weight loss. @AmberAlhadeff's group used an elegant approach to identify largely dissociable circuits for nausea and weight loss.
Drugs like Ozempic are great for weight loss, but they make some people feel sick. We discovered that the brain circuits mediating the appetite suppression are distinct from those that mediate nausea – a finding that may be leveraged to develop more selective GLP1-based drugs.
A new Brains in Briefs article is out now! In this edition, @_Aaron_McKnight summarizes how NGG student Rae Herman uncovered a novel role for GLP-1R-based drugs to curb nicotine use and even prevent nicotine withdrawal-induced weight gain! #PennNGG

Excited to present new work at #SfN22! Tuesday afternoon poster J4! Also check out cool stuff from @ryanjpost (738.02 poster FF15) and @_Aaron_McKnight + @_alexvtheg (139.21 poster X13)
When Nathaniel, a bioengineering postbac, joined the lab 2 years ago, I had no idea he would have such an ENORMOUS impact on our research program. Last night we celebrated and mourned his leaving to start a PhD @Caltech. I’m so proud- watch out for great things from this one!!!
