I remember when I made the mistake of treating my dad like a client.

TIME FOR ACTION: SAVE NIGERIA'S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), under the leadership of *Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman(Garkuwan Matasan Arewa), wishes to once again draw the attention of all Nigerians to the worsening state of the nation's healthcare system and the urgent need for decisive government intervention.

For several months, the National Executive Council (NEC) of NARD has demonstrated patience, maturity, and an unwavering commitment to industrial harmony. We have extended the Federal Government's ultimata on more than four occasions in good faith, hoping that our longstanding demands would receive the urgent attention they deserve.

Regrettably, many of the assurances made have remained unfulfilled, while critical issues affecting healthcare workers and the quality of healthcare delivery have been neglected, with no clear roadmap towards resolution.

Today, six (6) pressing issues continue to threaten the survival of Nigeria's healthcare system:

1. House Officers' Welfare: Persistent delays in salary payment, non-payment of salary arrears, and failure to regularize salary payments nationwide.

2. Assaults on Healthcare Workers: The continuous rise in attacks on healthcare professionals without a comprehensive government policy to prevent such incidents or ensure appropriate sanctions against perpetrators.

3. The LUTH Crisis: The denial of call meal entitlements, withdrawal of other welfare packages, and refusal by some consultants to endorse examination forms for eligible Resident Doctors.

4. Promotion Arrears: non-payment of promotion arrears owed to Medical Officers.

5. Salary Arrears: Failure to pay salary arrears in several institutions, including FUHS Otukpo, UUTH Uyo, OAUTHC ILE- IFE, FMC Owo, AEFUTHA Abakaliki, among others.

6. PAT Arrears: non-payment of 19 months PAT arrears owed to the entire healthcare workers.

These are not merely doctors' demands. They are fundamental issues that directly affect the morale, productivity, and retention of the healthcare workforce, ultimately impacting every Nigerian who depends on our hospitals for care.

Despite repeated dialogue and sustained engagement, the Government has failed to demonstrate the level of commitment required to resolve these longstanding concerns.

Consequently, after exhaustive deliberations, the National Executive Council of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has resolved to embark on a Total, Comprehensive, and Indefinite Nationwide Strike, commencing at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, 10th August, 2026, should these issues remain unresolved.

We sincerely regret the inconvenience this action may cause Nigerians. However, we believe that preserving the integrity of Nigeria's healthcare system requires immediate and courageous action. A healthcare system cannot function effectively when those entrusted with saving lives are continually neglected.

We therefore call on all Nigerians, civil society organizations, professional bodies, and well-meaning stakeholders to lend their voices in urging the Federal Government to act swiftly and responsibly to avert this avoidable disruption of healthcare services.

To our esteemed members across the country, we appreciate your resilience, sacrifices, and unwavering dedication to patient care. We urge you to remain calm, united, disciplined, and resolute as we collectively pursue a better healthcare system for all.

The time for promises has passed. The time for action is now.
