Canada won’t do that though, because though Canada protests against US impositions on itself to limit its sovereignty— it aids the US in pushing those exact impositions against other states in the Caribbean, Latin America, on the African continent, and throughout Asia.
If you ask pro-capitalist people why a job like, say, sanitation work has such an abysmal wage even though the job is necessary, they’ll tell you that it is an unskilled occupation. We could contest that, but for the sake of argument, let’s concede. By this logic, value is derived from how much labor is required to accomplish something—in this case, the labor of learning the skill in addition to the labor of completing the task at hand. A doctor, then, would earn a much higher wage because of the labor required to obtain the necessary degrees to practice. Okay. But then, if you ask a pro-capitalist people again why the price of a pair of glasses, a mattress, or even a bottle of water is so expensive, despite these things being cheap and easy to make, they’ll tell you that value is not determined by the labor that goes into producing something, but by need and demand. This inconsistency reveals how neoliberal economics functions: the value of something means whatever is most convenient for the ruling class.
This is also what atlanta feels like now. A bunch of middle class people who’ve never actually experienced the blackness they’re selling and hate the black people that actually live it
On one hand, it is farcical and tragic that Zelensky is presiding over these reburials. These are the figureheads of the very ideology his grandfather fought against, and which claimed the lives of so many members of his family.
On the other, it is deeply revealing of the ways in which Jewish identity has been weaponized, and Jewish suffering inverted, to support the very thing that gave us Hitler in the first place: imperialism.
I was not all that surprised to learn that the Holocaust was almost unmentionable across Europe for decades after the war. In Germany, it only really entered public discourse in the 1960s. Switzerland did not acknowledge its complicity until the late 1990s. In nearly every case, the determinant was not some spasm of guilt or reflection, but qualitative changes in relations with Israel.
Of course, historical memory is important, but that was never at stake here. The Holocaust was inconvenient — drenched as it was in the broader history of anti-communism, colonialism, and imperialism — until it could be deployed to support renewed colonial and imperial violence. As Western leaders mantrically repeated “never again”, the words under their breath said “again, and again, and again, just not on our soil."
In this way, the Holocaust became just another weapon in the Western arsenal. And with that emerged a stunning and audacious experiment in alchemy: all of imperialism’s enemies became “Hitler", while the Hitlerian particle that fidgeted within the nucleus of every Western state disappeared from view.
Now, two of the sharpest tips in the many-sided spear of global reaction, Zionism and Ukrainian nationalism, are removed from the category of fascism altogether for the fact of being , in one way or another, Jewish. There are few insults to historical memory as damning as this.
“Russia” was not colonial through the USSR.
USSR was a multinational developmentalist state. Russian nationhood was undermined & did not define “Soviet”
USSR was an integrated, industrial economy organized through nationalizing territories w/out colonial core-periphery ⬇️ 1/2
Brazilian workers at 🇧🇷’s state-owned Petrobras have been urging to send oil to Cuba. Lula declined in May, saying the risk of U.S. sanctions was too costly. This is why the “U.S. empire is dying” folks need to actually assess what U.S. hegemonic decline *means materially* rn..The U.S. may be losing its grip in Asia, but its colonizing tf outta Latin America and can still make countries as powerful as Brazil pay a price for going against it
The state of politics today is such that the right gets away with saying openly racist things on a daily basis whereas the left gets labelled anti-semitic for being critical of a genocidal state.
if the only issue with american police was they kill approximately 900-1200 people a year, maybe i could be convinced the institution was correctable.
the problem is they don’t just kill. they sexually violate, exploit, maim, steal, lie, rape (both men and women!). with functional impunity. they have arguably the stealthiest, most powerful union on earth; damn near bulletproof, historically unprecedented incentives to engage in racialized and anti-poor thuggery against vulnerable populations to which few others could only dream of possessing.
and they do all this while being the biggest, whiniest babies known to man that every single sector of the political system must suck up to because are, in every sense of the word, a bulwark, the first domestic line of defense between the classes.
Indonesia has Christian officials. Malaysia has a Sikh cabinet minister. Pakistan and Bangladesh have non-Muslims in parliament. Jordan reserves seats for Christians. Senegal is ~95% Muslim and had a Catholic president for 20 years. Lebanon literally requires its president to be Christian. You asked for ONE.
This is checkmate by Iran. They know we have no munitions left. And far from begging, they’re openly saying THERE WILL BE NO DEAL between Iran and the United States under Donald Trump. Trump has officially given us the most spectacular geopolitical failure/defeat in U.S. history.
