COACHES SPOTLIGHT: When discussing some of the rising head coaches in Division I women’s college basketball, UNLV’s Lindy La Rocque is always part of the conversation. She has completely transformed the Lady Rebels—turning a program that hadn’t reached the NCAA Tournament in 20 years into a consistent NCAA Tournament contender.

Before her arrival, UNLV endured 10 losing seasons in 14 years. Under La Rocque, the program has recorded five consecutive winning seasons, including four straight 20-win campaigns—the longest streak of 20-win seasons since the Lady Rebels had nine between 1982 and 1991.

In just her second year at the helm, La Rocque guided UNLV to a (26-7) record and an NCAA Tournament appearance—the program’s first in two decades. The following season, the Lady Rebels achieved their first-ever 30-win season with a (31-3) record, earning a spot in the AP Top 25 for the first time since 1994. Another 30-win campaign came in 2023-24, ending with yet another NCAA Tournament berth.

Even after losing Desi-Rae Young to eligibility, UNLV remained a Mountain West powerhouse. They finished the 2024-25 season with the conference’s best record and, despite an early exit in the conference tournament, secured a WNIT bid. There, they notched a win over Hawaii, the program’s first postseason victory since 2004.

La Rocque now enters her sixth season facing significant roster turnover. The Lady Rebels have lost Kiara Jackson, one of the nation’s top point guards, and leading scorer Amarachi Kimpson to the transfer portal, along with five of their top seven scorers from last season. Yet, La Rocque and her staff have proven their ability to rebuild and reload.

Through the transfer portal, UNLV added Cleveland State’s Destiny Leo, who averaged (15.2) points per game over five seasons; Alcorn State’s Destiny Brown, a three-year contributor averaging (13.0) points, (7.9) rebounds, and (2.0) blocks; Akron’s Shelbee Brown, who posted (14.0) points and (8.9) rebounds per game; and Mariah Elohim, a 10-point contributor. They’ll join returning stars Aaliyah Alexander and Meadow Roland, giving La Rocque a mix of talent and experience ready to chase another NCAA Tournament run. ✨
