Simple Tips to Create your Gem Textures ⬇️⬇️⬇️
I am using a very basic gem model, you can use this tutorial for whatever model you like! I will also be doing everything in the colour channel which is why this is very useful for UGC.
First we will add the baked lighting filter to our model, I will use the "Glazed Patio" environment map.
We will then add a fill layer underneath the baked lighting with Roughness = 0 and Metallic = 1
This will give it a nice shiny look, trust the process.
Now for the important part, let's add a new fill layer, then add a black mask, within the black mask we will add a curvature generator.
In this material we will increase the height only around 0.5
As you can see from the pictures this significantly improves the texture but we can do more 😁
I like to duplicate this layer and decrease the balance of the curvature generator, enable the colour channel and make it as white as possible and finally change the blending mode to soft light. This will give a nice highlight.
Finally let's add a stylized filter into the baked lighting layer, use the "Gemstone" preset. I set the blending mode opacity to 50 for a nice mix between stylized and realistic.
You can change around the direction of the lighting within the baked lighting and also change the colour of the first fill layer to your preference and in the end you will have a reallllly nice looking gem!
Let me know how you guys found this tutorial and if you use it please show me what you made in the comments!

Rigging tip ✨
The eye and lip protrusions are made from duplicated head parts, no new art needed ^^
Small details like this add a lot to semirealistic head turns~
