The United Nations has declared 2024 as the International Year of Camelids (IYC 2024).
This will highlight how camelids are key to the livelihoods of millions of households in hostile environments across over 90 countries, particularly Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
The International Year of Camelids 2024 aims to build awareness of the untapped potential of camelids and to call for increased investment in the camelid sector, advocating for greater research, capacity development and the use of innovative practices and technologies.
Background:
The resolution for the International Year of Camelids was proposed by the Government of Bolivia and presented by Ecuador as Country Chair of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC).
The resolution was approved by the UN General Assembly on 17 October 2017 upon recommendation by UN Food and Agriculture Organization.
UN FAO officially launched the IYC 2024 on 4 December 2023 in Rome, Italy.
Camelids:
1. Camelids are members of the biological family Camelidae, the only currently living family in the suborder Tylopoda.
2. Camelidae comprises the genera Camelus (including true camel species), Lama (including the guanaco and Ilama), and Vicugna (including the vicuña and alpaca).
3. Camelids are even-toed ungulates classified in the order Artiodactyla, along with species including whales, pigs, deer, cattle, and antelopes.
4. Camelids are large, strictly herbivorous animals with slender necks and long legs.
5. Camelids do not have hooves; rather, they have two-toed feet with toenails and soft foot pads.
