The UAE doubles down, risking the social contract

On May 3rd, Iran confirmed that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) used fighter jets to bomb Iranian territory.

This comes weeks after Iran downed at least four Chinese-made Wing Loong drones. At that time, Tehran was uncertain whether the drones belonged to the UAE or Saudi Arabia, as both operate the same model.

Today, Iran confirmed that the UAE has fully entered the war, deploying both drones and manned aircraft.

Until now, the Emirati regime had denied any offensive collaboration with the coalition. In the first week of the war, Abu Dhabi claimed it had not authorized the use of its soil or airspace for strikes against Iran. This proved to be a mere performance.

As soon as Iran began targeting HIMARS positions on UAE soil, hundreds of American soldiers sought refuge in hotels across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Ras Al Khaimah.

In recent weeks, the UAE has stopped hiding its collaboration with Israel. During the recent truce, Emirati officials attended a meeting in Israel alongside the Commander of CENTCOM. By doing so, the UAE sealed its role as Israel’s staunch ally, a stance that goes beyond military cooperation and is marked by a deep diplomatic rupture with Saudi Arabia.

The UAE now finds itself in a geopolitical sandwich: Iran to its front, Saudi Arabia at its rear, and Qatar, with whom relations were only recently restored, at its side. This posture, dictated by Abu Dhabi, is extremely dangerous on economic, military, and social levels.

The UAE was built on a Social Contract: the government provides wealth, security, and world-class services in exchange for absolute political loyalty.

This contract depends on a strong economy; as long as prosperity is guaranteed, most citizens accept foreign policy decisions, even if they disagree with them.

Currently, the greatest social risk is religious, the fear that the alliance with Israel will be perceived as a betrayal of Islam. To mitigate this, Abu Dhabi invests heavily in the narrative of Moderate Islam and coexistence (exemplified by the Abrahamic Family House), attempting to reframe the alliance as a tool for peace rather than war.

All this occurs while the UAE maintains one of the world’s most sophisticated internal surveillance systems, ensuring any organized dissent is neutralized before it gains momentum.

The UAE has decided to bet everything against Iran, but why is this a high-stakes gamble? Because no one expects regime change in Iran anymore. On the contrary, the Iranian government appears solid. This is where Abu Dhabi’s strategy begins to threaten its own survival.

The UAE is now Iran’s primary target. In a possible second phase of the war, the scale of the Iranian retaliatory strike will be devastating now that they have confirmed Emirati jets are bombing Iranian facilities. Even looking toward the future, this move may be the final nail in the coffin for everything the UAE has built.

These sculptures were made by Murjoni Merriweather, she is a Baltimore-based sculptor and MICA (Maryland Institute College of Art) graduate with a B.A. in Ceramics and Film who creates expressive clay busts and figures celebrating Black culture, natural hairstyles, and lived experiences.

Her "grow bottom" sculptures appear to emerge directly from surfaces, featuring detailed elements like intricate braids, locs, afros, gold grills, and jewellery to challenge European beauty standards and counter stereotypes.

Merriweather's work has been exhibited at venues including the Walters Art Museum, Rubell Museum, and group shows on hip-hop and contemporary art. She draws from real people to give each piece it's own spirit and personality.

Went down the rabbit hole on this. The dancing is the tamest part of the story. Marine biologist Amanda Vincent has spent decades studying seahorses, and what’s underneath that morning ritual goes way deeper than a cute video.

The morning ritual lasts about 6 minutes. Both seahorses brighten their skin, link tails, and pirouette around a shared piece of coral or seagrass. Researchers call it “the carousel dance.” But it has a specific biological function: it synchronizes their reproductive cycles so the female’s eggs are ready the exact moment the male’s brood pouch is empty. That timing matters because the male can’t accept new eggs while he’s already pregnant.

The male gets pregnant. The female transfers her eggs into his pouch through an organ called an ovipositor (a tube for depositing eggs). The whole transfer takes about 6 seconds. His pouch seals shut immediately. Inside, he grows a network of blood vessels that works almost exactly like a human placenta, delivering oxygen and nutrients to up to 1,000 developing embryos. Research from the University of Sydney, published in the journal Placenta, found the pouch wall thins and builds new blood vessels during pregnancy in ways that closely mirror what happens in a mammalian uterus.

He gives birth using skeletal muscles, not smooth muscles like in mammalian labor. That means he has conscious control over the process. Labor can take hours. And within hours of delivering up to 1,000 fully formed babies, he’s ready to mate again. The female already has her next batch of eggs prepared, sometimes the same day.

Less than 0.5% of those babies survive to adulthood. Fewer than 5 out of every 1,000. No parental care after birth. They get swept into ocean currents, eaten by crabs, or starve before they find food. That survival rate is why the morning dance matters so much. Every lost mating cycle is hundreds of offspring that never existed.

The monogamy is extraordinary for a fish. Only about 3% of mammals form lasting partnerships. For fish, it’s rarer still. But in species like the Australian H. whitei, pairs are genetically monogamous across multiple breeding seasons. They greet each other every morning and ignore other seahorses entirely. The bond only breaks when one partner disappears. Amanda Vincent once watched a female keep visiting a male whose brood pouch had been punctured by a predator, making pregnancy impossible. She showed up every morning for weeks until his pouch healed. Then they remated.

About 150 million seahorses are pulled from the ocean every year for traditional medicine and the pet trade. Most pet seahorses don’t last six weeks. 14 of the 47 known species were only identified in this century, meaning we’re losing populations of animals we barely knew existed.
