🇨🇦 A cedar fire is running toward the Canadian County line in Oklahoma.

The fire is burning between Binger and Cogar in rural Caddo County, north of Highway 152 near County Road 2670. Evacuations are underway. Multiple county departments are on it, Union City Fire and the Canadian County Task Force are en route, and air tankers are working the flames. The smoke column is visible from the southwest side of the Oklahoma City metro.

What it's burning matters. Eastern redcedar is the worst fuel in the state — the foliage carries volatile oils, a mature tree torches in seconds, and fire crews here call the resulting flame front what it is, a bomb. Cedar has been spreading across central Oklahoma rangeland for decades because nothing kills it except fire, and fire is exactly what's been suppressed.

Caddo has already had the Buzzard Roost fire near Cement this year and issued a burn ban. Canadian County has had one since March.

Air support is out now. If the wind holds through the afternoon, cedar country doesn't give crews much of a chance to build line.
