I'll be there! Along with many other people who are hoping that:
1. You'll discuss the new TB research you're plowing all your bedaquiline profits into. Because I'm sure you're doing so, just as you've frequently bragged in news stories about bedaquiline!
2. You'll clearly state that you won't enforce secondary bedaquiline patents in any low- or middle-income countries with high TB rates.
A bit more detail here. SO grateful to @StopTB for negotiating this step forward, but still frustrated that J&J's worship of secondary patents will prevent generic access in Eastern Europe and South Africa.
Truly baffling that @JNJNews hasn't released a statement about this good news... It is false to suggest-- as some recently have-- that #Nerdfighteria will just forget about this, sit down, and shut up. #PatientsNotPatents#StopTB
For those curious how the global health community is responding to the news that bedaquiline generic access will be expanded....
(p.s. it just baffles me that @jnjnews has not released a statement beyond their catastrophic post yesterday. Do they ... need a marketing department?)
Grateful to
1. @PhillyD covers @JNJNews's bedaquline story for his six million subscribers: https://t.co/xeUfcl8bYg
2. @Forbes, which seems to know more about J&J's decision than they have publicly acknowledged (just release a statement, J&J! It's easy! I'll write it for you!): https://t.co/7nxrtKqZO6
3. @goodgoodgood for covering this as well: https://t.co/VEAvkdsV4M
We keep fighting until bedaquiline and all other TB treatments are available to everyone everywhere--saving millions of lives and making all humans safer from the deadliest infection in human history.
It's true, @JNJNews. We're starting to have feelings for you since you announced the deal to make generic bedaquiline available through the Stop TB Partnership. But we can't FULLY close this thrilling enemies-to-lovers romance until you
- Commit to the deal with GDF in perpetuity.
- Provide the list of countries that can access bedaquiline through this deal.
- Publicly acknowledge this amounts to a functional abandonment of secondary patents on bedaquiline in countries with high TB burden.
Say that in a tweet or press release, and IT'S ON.
@johngreen@JNJNews We @StopTB want to thank you @JohnGreen for the visibility you’ve brought to this important issue, to @JnJnews for making bedaquiline available to all those who need it, and to everyone who spoke up in support of our goal to #EndTB by 2030
!!!!!!!!!!!!! @JNJNews, THANK YOU for choosing #PatientsNotPatents. Takes real guts to live up to your credo. Generic bedaquiline WILL BE AVAILABLE in almost every country with a high tuberculosis burden. I am so happy and grateful to the Stop TB Partnership, J&J, and especially the activists around the world who are standing up for TB patients. So much more work to do, but WHAT WONDERFUL NEWS TO WAKE UP TO.
YES!! @JNJNews has granted Stop TB Partnership´s Global Drug Facility`s licenses that enable them to supply bedaquiline for the majority of low-and middle-income countries, including countries where patents remain in effect!
Thank you for listening & making the right choice!
We need to #ENDTB and to do it we must make the best treatments available to everyone who needs them-especially the most vulnerable communities globally.
Join us in calling for @JNJNews to pledge they will not enforce secondary patents on bedaquiline: https://t.co/QiCp5uW1YU
"#greenscreen dont be shy, johnson & johnson. You can @ me in your ridiculous statement about denying tuberculosis patients access to live-saving medication by evergreening your 20-year-old patent and keeping the price of bedaquiline artificially high. " #PatientsNotPatents#JNJ
@JNJNews It is false to suggest -- as some recently have-- that evergreening your 20-year patent on a life-saving medication and keeping the price of bedaquiline artificially high is somehow in line with your advertised commitment to acting ethically.
@JNJNews - yes, If you’re telling us that you will allow the sale of generics anywhere in the developing world then please let us know! Maybe we got it wrong and you only did the arduous work of extending the patent in a bunch of developing countries for funsies!
Like many intentionally confusing corporate crisis response messages, this says a bunch of things that are true but don’t mean what you think, like for example:
“On April 5, during a World Health Organization meeting, the GDF shared its intent to launch a tender for generic versions of SIRTURO® 100mg in the third quarter of 2023”
This sounds like it says “everybody can have generic bedaquiline!!” But actually they *had to allow* the production of a generic because some countries had the power and systems in place to reject their attempt to extend their patent. The generic will not be available in countries where the patent extension wasn’t rejected, just like John said in his video.
Unless that’s not the case @JNJNews!!
If you’re telling us that you will allow the sale of generics anywhere in the developing world then we will happily send thank you baskets to your entire c-suite! Please let us know! Maybe we got it wrong and you only did the arduous work of extending the patent in a bunch of developing countries for funsies!
