Look. Yes Beseech the Mirror and Reaper King can be played in any deck under this rule.
But if anyone actually thinks a 6 mana tutor and a 10 mana lord for scarecrow tribal is 'good' they're unserious people that you should ignore.
@SaffronOlive Yo Seth @SaffronOlive no one is putting up with mono-black in standard. I'm a mono-black believer and I think it can place. I would love if you recorded with it on the ladder!
The sudden urge to have an orgy with (random order):
- An evil scientist
-Another evil scientist
-An orc
-Another orc
- An elven princess
-An ex elven princess, currently adventurer
-A drow
-A certain centaur girl
- Her favourite "goat"
- A very specific Naga
- Her wife Chandra.
Effective immediately, we are ending our sponsorship with Ultimate Guard. You'll still find us at future events and are excited to explore new collaborations ahead.
Has there ever been a Standard combo deck that could also play a fair game as well as Vivi Cauldron? I'm struggling to think of one, but I might be missing something.
What's wild to me is that we even protect the secondary market at all. Especially weird to have that take right now when no one can buy sealed product anyway because of scalpers.
@doluusa Especially because Vivi is doing nothing in other formats (commander isn't real). If standard sucks because of Vivi then it will impact the game hard with no one buying other expensive cards for the easiest 60-card format to get into.

Instead of making the format appeal to people by making the format not suck, we must maintain the status quo.
Why do eternal formats get to have bans if something is egregious but Standard players get to eat shit?
@SaffronOlive Odd hot take - I think the playerbase has to be ok with standard sucking. There isn't enough active standard players wanting to play standard for them to warrant a ban and piss off the ones that bought into vivi combo
Vivi warps the design of every card printed whilst it's legal. It's so much easier to break Vivi than it is to break Cauldron.
If you delete cauldron, there's a good argument the best deck in standard is still Izzet Prowess.
Albeit the gap between it and other decks diminishes.
It's Vivi.
Cauldron is a card that warps the design of activated effects, sure. But it has existed in standard without doing anything too degenerate for years.
Vivi cares about *everything*. He cares about non creature spells, power, noncombat damage, +1/+1, counters...
What if rather than banning cards Magic worked like Battlegrounds and adjusted your starting life total based on the deck you are playing (like if you have Vivi in your deck you start at 15 life, for example)? I know it's probably not practical, but would it work?
The one we have, Clarion Conquerer dies too easily.
A surgical extraction type effect would do the job.
Better yet, just ban Vivi. Cauldron did fair things until Vivi came around.
I think some sort of Pithing Needle effect (that shuts down all activated abilities like Phyrexian Revoker) is probably the cleanest answer that could be printed into Standard (although it would still get got by Abrade and such).
Intuitively this makes sense, but when you consider that in some recent events 50%+ of decks are Izzet Cauldron and that Agatha's Soul Cauldron is main deck graveyard hate, I'm not sure this plan actually works.
This would be true of the Eldrazi titans but whether it is true of mutated Eldrazi or spawn is yet to be seen because they have never (and likely will never) interact.
@mtg_ds To the best of my knowledge, no. There wasn't any time where Phyrexians and Eldrazi were simultaneously active in the Multiverse outside of the brief period between New Phyrexia and Eldritch Moon.
Importantly; Because Eldrazi just projections, I think they're immune to phyresis.
