"In the past, only some of the males, but all of the females, were able to procreate. Equality is more natural for females." - Nassim Nicholas Taleb in The Bed of Procrustes
Every communist government in history killed its own economy before it finished killing its own people.
The Soviet collectivization of 1929 to 1933 is the cleanest case study. Stalin abolished private farms, centralized grain distribution, and produced a famine that killed between 5 and 7 million Ukrainians. No market existed to signal the shortage. No price spike triggered additional supply. Planners in Moscow simply got the numbers wrong, and Ukrainians starved for it.
Mao's Great Leap Forward (1958 to 1962) repeated this at even greater scale. Peasants melted down farming tools to meet steel quotas, so crops rotted in fields. Between 30 and 55 million people died. The price system, which would have routed food toward scarcity, had been abolished by decree.
Venezuela offers you a recent live demonstration. Chavez nationalized oil in 2007, price controls followed, and by 2019 the bolivar had lost 99.9 percent of its value. Grocery shelves emptied. Physicians fled.
Prices carry the information producers need to allocate resources. Strip that signal away, centralize decisions in a planning bureau, and you get organized, systematic death. Communism failed repeatedly because it physically cannot process the distributed knowledge that voluntary exchange produces every second in billions of transactions.
Absolutely incredible progress against extreme poverty in India. There has been no better time to be an Indian in history than today. There has been no golden age as golden as today. Relatively, yes, India may have been better than others earlier but in absolute terms this is it.
Rappel que les communistes haissent du plus profond de leur coeur Taïwan car c'est la preuve vivante que la Chine aurait très bien pu se développer sans des famines et des massacres de masse
As a linguistics guy this clip has been on replay in my head for ages. The Aboriginals are capable of comprehending numbers if they learn them in childhood but this may be the most fascinating peek ever into how firmly constrained cognitive capacities are by language acquisition.
Elixir is very good at handling many connections without breaking. So you don't need to give it any special attention for good performance. Here a benchmark with a lot of clients posting to the once-campfire repos. Elixir mops the floor with the Rust versions.
Fascinating book which recounts, among other things, how Welsh miners would read and discuss Hegelian dialectics, completely misunderstanding it due to their limited formal education, and wasting their time in shallow pseudo-intellectual discussion when they might have better spent it drinking or fighting.
“Our own access to what’s going on in our minds is very impoverished. […] The sense—which was overpoweringly obvious to somebody like John Locke or Descartes—that the mind is transparent to itself […] has been completely overthrown.”
—Daniel Dennett on knowledge of the mind
Milei balanced the budget after 9 years of deficit.
The surplus covers the debt service too, so the government no longer has to borrow or print just to stay open.
That was the inflation machine in Argentina. Chronic deficits financed by the central bank, a collapsing peso, and prices that reset every month.
Close the gap and the printing press loses its reason, the currency stops being a melting ice cube, and saving, lending, and pricing in pesos become possible again.
Marxists are legitimately religious people who think that if you read their holy texts earnestly, you immediately have to convert to their religion. If you don't, your inability to see God's light just makes you very dull. In the same way believers cannot accept anyone reading the Bible/Quran and not coming off convinced without a backhanded insult.
Every educated person knows who the gravedigger is supposed to be according to Marx and why. I was indirectly asking a meta question about why they're not digging the grave and why people like you are necessary.
But the "READ MARX!!1" tic is just too strong for the faithful, as if a certain Lenin didn't already feel forced to conclude the proletariat are never going to do the revolution on their own and that the vanguard is needed to nudge them into this direction.
Socialism is so good that it made the people with the most fertile soil starve to death (Soviet Union)
And it made the country with the largest oil reserves run out of gasoline (Venezuela)
