His brilliantly written true crime historical thriller, a tale of murder by plague in 1933 Calcutta is a riveting read. Set among the rural Bangali aristocratic zamindari classes at a time of protest and revolution, this audacious crime predate many of the more well known Cold War era killings and botched attempts at murder by poison-tipped sharp objects by more than 40 years. And created headlines across the globe in its day

Food and hunger should never be used as weapons of war. Genocide is an outrage.
We demand that Israel ends its nearly total blockade of virtually all humanitarian and food aid into Gaza!

"What's happening in Gaza is inhumane through deliberate starvation and the weaponisation of hunger.
People are dying of malnutrition and the aid that has been let in is a fraction of what is needed. There's never been a more important time to speak up than now."

"According to the narrative that most of us are familiar with, queerness is a modern phenomenon, and the modern, alarming queerness of mermaids or unicorns is a recent deviation from the norm. Subverting the innocence of our childhood fairy tales and making them into something dangerous. Nothing could be further than the truth. Much of the folklore, myth, and legend we remember from childhood comes to us through the distorting lens of colonialism and Christianity. The Victorians not only reinvented the concept of fairy stories, but also imposed their morality on them, bowdlerising them, erasing any trace of a past that did not conform to their standard."

MUSEUM FOR THE FUTURE: SLAVERY & REVOLUTION, A TOUSSAINT LOUVERTURE SPECIAL
🖥 https://t.co/8baWgrNSMU
📅 Tue 29 April ⏰ 2pm BST
Please join me with Drs @peggybrunache and @RapportMike, along with dead historical guest and Haitian Revolution leader, Toussaint Louverture, for a fascinating conversation on slavery and revolution and a virtual museum of ourselves
-----
The Haitian Revolution (1791-1804) under the leadership of Toussaint Louverture, successfully established the first independent black republic in the Americas. The French Revolution of 1789 played a major role in inspiring notions of greater liberty globally, and lead initially to demands for greater rights and finally the abolition of slavery itself in Saint-Domingue (present day Haiti).
What we know of the past is partly down to luck. The writings and objects that remain suitably intact and in a format we can read. How much of our world today will still be readable in 50 or 100 years’ time? How will people in the future see us?
MUSEUM FOR THE FUTURE offers living and dead historical guests space for conversation and to contribute objects to curate how we'd like to be seen by people in the future as a wonderful springboard to talk about ourselves, the dead guest and their cultural/historical significance

ENGLISH MOTHER TONGUE IN A SPANISH WORLD
INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY 2025
https://t.co/gPsZJmMEif
📅 Fri 21 Feb ⏰ 4pm GMT
Ever thought about English as a mother tongue?
When we think of mother language, in the public imagination, it often conjures images of languages other than English from across the globe or dialects endangered by a regimented school system, societal pressures and the proliferation of social and mainstream media. But what if your identity is as a mother tongue English speaker living mostly surrounded by a different language?
Our guest, musical director, composer and flamenco guitarist, Calvin Hazen grew up in New Mexico surrounded by Spanish speakers and many locals whose spoken words also have indigenous roots and structures.
He has also lived in Madrid for over 20 years and performed internationally to critical acclaim in venues such as Radio City Music Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Teatro Nacional in Mexico City and Teatro Madrid in Spain. His television appearances include The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, and The Regis and Kathy Lee Show. As musical director and composer, he’s worked for Suite Espanola, Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo and Maria Benitez Teatro Flamenco. And is a regular performer and instructor for Festival Flamenco, Albuquerque with recording credits that include 5 time platinum release Terral with Spanish pop icon Pablo Alboran, and many other collaborations in the US and Spain.
@Jibunnessa (Founder & Director, @_DigitalMuseum) will be your host and presenter.
Please join us as we explore what English as a mother tongue means, and how it and the surrounding tapestry of other languages help shape creativity.

JEWISH MALAYALAM & ARABI-MALAYALAM
INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY 2025
https://t.co/VIsI05w6td
📅 Fri 21 Feb ⏰ 2pm GMT
Malayalam is a language spoken by Malayali people primarily living in Kerala and other adjoining districts of South India, including Karnataka, Nilgiris, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and a worldwide diaspora in the West and parts of the Persian Gulf. As one of India’s classical languages, it is thought to have a long history of development and interaction with Sanskrit, Hebrew, Arabic and other languages which have played their roles in word adoption and structural changes. There are also differences in how Malayalam is spoken and written due to religious, cultural and historical differences between communities.
This conversation will explore Jewish Malayalam and Arabi-Malayalam with our guest, Dr Ophira Gamliel.
Dr @OphiraGamliel is Senior Lecturer in Theology & Religious Studies, @UofGlasgow. Her research area focuses on South Asian languages, cultures and religions to examine both their contemporary use and context today, and the history of exchanges and connections between different faiths, regions, generations, communities and institutions. Her work investigates performance and ritual activities, especially in the context of shared festivals, and on the documentation and preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The history and culture of Kerala and Malayalam language and literature, often intersecting with environmental humanities and climate change adaptation and transformation, are her primary areas of expertise.
She is also a Sanskrit scholar who has taught both Sanskrit and Malayalam in Jerusalem and Germany. And has written widely on the Malayalam language and how Hebrew and Arabic language structures seep into certain aspects of the language among certain groups.

INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY 2025

Glasgow, as the largest city in Scotland by population, is also home to many spoken languages. The majority speak English. There are also growing number of people learning Gaelic. And residents originally from the Shetlands, Orkney and Aberdeenshire who also speak Scots. In addition, many European, Asian and African languages are also spoken as their mother tongue by different ethnic and cultural groups.
Our 2 guests and I are all residents of Glasgow, who both contribute creatively and culturally to the city and are shaped by its atmosphere and stories.
Vasco Zeferina is a standup comedian originally from Portugal who has also lived in Spain, Macedonia, Netherlands, Mozambique, China and England. He completed his PhD and also has a background in amateur theatre in Portugal. His life on the Scottish comedy circuit began as a personal challenge to become more confident in communicating in English. He also works as an energy analyst and modeller with @OfGem.
Taner Kemirtlek is a Glasgow based freelance artist, composer, arranger, transcriber, piano teacher and alumni of @RCStweets. Originally from Merseyside of Scottish and Turkish extraction, he embraces multiple cultural influences in his work as composer
My mother tongue is Bangla. I lived most of my life in London and now live in Scotland. I dream in English and Bangla, and occasional flavours of Scotland stray into my words too, as do words from other languages encountered.
This is a conversation on our mother tongues and what they mean to us. We will also teach and share words between us.
