With a staff of 6500 personnel from across the world (20,000 with families), 86 UN agencies that include headquarters of UNEP and UN-Habitat, a duty station servicing the whole of Africa and a total of 166 countries globally, a complex sitting on 140 acres of land amidst the Karura forest complex, and increasing migration of more UN agencies to Gigiri, the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) is the fastest expanding of the UN headquarters and a key. An investment of USD 340 million is set to completely transform the UNON complex and operations, elevating it to premier heights and cementing Nairobi as a United Nations pivot.

With @ForeignOfficeKE PS Dr. @SingoeiAKorir, @ImmigrationDept PS Dr. Belio Kipsang and @ODG_UNON H.E Zainab Hawa Bangura, we reviewed progress of the roll-out of the Gigiri Masterplan, and toured the complex to assess works of Phase I of the Masterplan. The jewel in the crown is a new Assembly Hall set to raise UNON's conferencing capacity from 2000 to 9000, placing Nairobi at par with New York and Geneva, the other UN headquarters.

We also reviewed essential services by GoK facilitating operations of the UN in Nairobi.

I have formally commenced my tour of duty as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary/Permanent Representative of the Republic of Kenya to the United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Following the presentation of my credentials, I held talks with UNON Director General H.E Zainab Hawa Bangura and met staff of the Kenyan Mission to UNON & UNEP.

Nairobi is one of only four UN headquarters in the world, alongside New York, Geneva and Vienna. It is the only United Nations hq in Africa and the only one in the whole of the global south. UNON services 86 UN agencies across 166 countries, has the largest complex of all UN offices in the world, and is the fastest growing duty station. As the home to UNEP and UN-Habitat, Nairobi is also the environment capital of the world.

My focus is to help strengthen the UN presence in Kenya/Africa/Global South, and ensure the people of Kenya feel the presence of the United Nations in real terms.

I left an indelible mark at my last public duty station. My enduring legacy that has transformed Kenyan sports includes getting FIFA to lift the ban on Kenyan football, securing the rights to host CHAN 2025 and AFCON 2027 in East Africa, triggering a deliberate, intentional and structured talent nurturing pipeline, and initiating unprecedented sports infrastructure upgrading programme that includes rehabilitation of Kasarani, Nyayo, Bukhungu, Kipchoge Keino and Kanduyi Stadia and construction of the spanking new futuristic Talanta Sports City. I also curated the transformative World Bank funded NYOTA project to empower the youth of Kenya.

Kenyans should expect a similar midas touch at UNON and UNEP, delivered by intellectual nous, relentless hands-on focus, unflinching attention to detail, all encompasing teamwork and integrity. Watch this space..
