DuPont and Chemours knew they were dumping toxic forever chemicals into our drinking water, but they put profits over people – which is why I sued them in 2020. Today, NC DOJ announced a $590 million settlement that builds on the more than $1.1 billion Chemours has already spent under the @NCDEQ consent order cleaning up the mess it made. I thank @NCAGO Jeff Jackson and Secretary of Environmental Quality Reid Wilson for continuing to hold Chemours accountable. The work isn’t done; now we must keep at it to ensure all North Carolinians can count on clean water from their taps.
Today we’re announcing the largest environmental damage payment in North Carolina history.
Chemours and DuPont are responsible for massive PFAS contamination of our water, especially in eastern NC.
This settlement is worth nearly $600m, with most funds going directly to local communities.
It was crucial that we got real money for our state, because the EPA completely failed. It gave these companies a slap on the wrist without even consulting us.
We just got North Carolina at least 20x what the EPA got for us.
This new money is in addition to the $1.2b Chemours has been required to spend by the previous court order to clean up their mess, but now that cleanup effort must also be financially guaranteed by DuPont - a key win to ensure the cleanup work continues.
My thanks to @NCDEQ for their partnership and dedication to clean water for our state.

My friend Joe John has been a courageous champion for everyday people as a lawyer, Judge, Crime Lab Director and legislator. I pray for his family and loved ones, knowing he has made a real difference for so many.
Serving as your Governor has been the honor of a lifetime. And tonight, we elected @JoshStein_ to keep moving us forward. He has the steady hand, the clear-eyed vision, and the servant’s heart to help make North Carolina stronger than ever.
My colleague, Sen. Corbin is spot on.
This conspiracy theory nonsense distracts from the critical work being done out west. This relentless effort to politicize the greatest disaster in state history insults the organizations and countless volunteers helping their neighbors.
The North Carolina Disaster Relief Fund is live. If you’re able to give, please consider a donation to help North Carolinians as they clean up and recover from Helene. You can donate at https://t.co/yjrg796nrJ.
Thank you @POTUS for quickly approving NC’s request for a Major Disaster Declaration. Western NC has been hit hard and we are working together rapidly to save lives, surge assistance and begin a difficult recovery. - RC

As of this morning, over 400 roads remain closed in NC. All roads in Western NC should be considered closed.
Remember: As crews work to clear and inspect roads and bridges, please give them room.

Donald Trump and NC GOP leaders embraced Mark Robinson for years knowing who he was and what he stood for including disrespect for women and inciting violence. They reap what they sow.
I was saddened to hear of the passing of longtime public servant, civil rights advocate and North Carolina representative Kelly Alexander Jr. I’m grateful for his years of service to our state, and my thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time. - RC
Gov. @RoyCooperNC: Folks, I have been out there on the campaign trail talking to voters. Vice President Harris has ignited a firestorm of excitement. I have that 2008 feeling. It is time for North Carolina to make history again
