🗣️Reporter: Enzo, can you talk us through the challenge that led to your red card?

🗣️ Enzo: “I knew I was already on a yellow card. When I went in for the challenge, there was no bad intention. My only objective was to win the ball and help my team. I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.

As soon as the collision happened, I could hear Spain’s players surrounding the referee, shouting that it was a card. Almost immediately, the referee reached for his pocket. He didn’t take much time before making the decision, even though it was a World Cup final and he knew I was already on a booking.

From my point of view, the decision was extremely harsh. In a match of that magnitude, you hope the referee carefully considers every big call because one decision can change the entire final.

I was devastated when I saw the red card. Leaving my teammates with ten men in a World Cup final is one of the worst feelings a footballer can experience. I wanted to be on the pitch fighting until the final whistle.

All week there was so much discussion about the referee before the match, and in the end I felt every decision seemed to go against us. That’s how it felt from where I was standing. We believed we were never given the benefit of the doubt in the big moments.

I’m disappointed, but I respect football and I respect the game. I just wish the key decisions in a World Cup final were judged with greater consistency. Those moments can define careers and determine who lifts the biggest trophy in football.”
