Phil, I think you've heard the gospel before, but who knows. Here goes:

This is what the bible says about how you can be sure you are going to heaven when you die:

1. Admit you are a sinner and that the penalty for that sin is death.
(Romans 3:23) "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"
(Romans 6:23a) "For the wages of sin is death;"

2. Believe that Jesus Christ loved you so much that he died for you and paid for your sin with his shed blood on the cross.
(Romans 5:8-9) "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. {9} Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him."

3. Confess with your mouth to Jesus that you are a sinner, that he died and paid for your sins, and that you believe he was resurrected three days after burial.
(Romans 10:9) "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."

If you sincerely believe these 3 points then you are saved for all eternity. This isn't hard to understand. God made it so simple even a small child can understand it because he wants everyone to be saved.
