Nine years ago, S. Anitha, a 17-year-old Dalit student from Ariyalur, became the first victim of the NEET examination.

She scored 1,176/1,200 in the Tamil Nadu State Board and had a medical cut-off of 196.75/200, enough to secure a medical seat under the state's earlier admission system. But with NEET made mandatory in 2017, her dream was shattered.

Anitha warned that NEET would l disproportionately harm students from rural backgrounds, government schools and marginalized communities. Her voice went unheard.

If the Supreme Court had listened to S. Anitha's concerns, countless children would not be facing the immense pressure and suffering associated with NEET today. Her story remains a powerful reminder of the human consequences of policy decisions.

On 1 September 2017, she died via suicide by hanging. 💔
