Imagine the Nigerian economy is a car.
For a while, the CBN had its foot firmly on the brake.
High interest rates discourage borrowing. Less borrowing can reduce demand, which can help bring inflation down.
Now, the CBN is releasing the brake somewhat.
MPR has gone from 26.5% to 23% that is a 350 basis-point cut.
What could this mean?
1. Credit could become cheaper.
Lower rates can make it more attractive for businesses and individuals to borrow, invest and expand by supporting economic activity.
2. Savings returns could come down.
If you’ve been getting returns of 20% or more on some fixed-income products, don’t be surprised if those yields eventually fall.
And when risk-free/low-risk returns fall, investors may start looking more closely at equities, businesses and other productive assets.
3. Capital could start flowing differently.
People have been asking for lower interest rates for a LONG time.
For context, 23% is roughly back to where Nigeria’s MPR was in February 2024.
But the CBN hasn’t completely taken its foot off the brake.
The CRR is still 45% for deposit money banks.
Very simply, if a bank has ₦100 of qualifying deposits, ₦45 has to be kept as reserves, before considering other liquidity and regulatory requirements.
So this isn’t just about interest rates.
It is about the flow of capital through the Nigerian economy.
The price of capital is changing.
And that could have implications for businesses, banks, investors, consumers and the broader economy.
What do you think?
Good morning to the entire universe.
I just want to tell you all that about 37 teenagers died in the custody of the NSCDC (Nigeria Security and “Civil Defence” Corps) in Niger State.
37 children!!!!!!!!!!! 37!!!!!!!!!! They’re literally babies!!!!!!
"We are not into illegal mining... Niger State Civil Defence Corps don't have the right to shoot at us... We are under 18, and we are not allowed to be taken inside a cell... Heat cannot kill a gold miner..."
Following the deaths of miners in Niger State custody, a witness has called for justice and a full investigation.
The historical context Francesca Lake has brought to LFW is unmatched. She explores Jamaican x British cultural depths that delve into moments of pride & painful connections to the cane fields I've not ever seen on a major runway platform this boldly
I've tried many different strats for making sure i stay up to date with all the different requests and threads i have from people, especially through imsg. so here's the most effective so far, I made a script that goes through my imessage (on PC) every 15 mins and tells me urgent things from still pending from my convos with people.
Nobody asked me, and I’m not an expert, but perhaps a direct to consumer retail arm on their website would do them some good.
Perhaps specialty goods like fitted tees for women, and better product modeling could help drive sales and spread awareness.
As a bonus, the tshirts don’t have a product description. I assume from the videos on their page, that they’re pure cotton; rare these days and in high demand for discerning customers.
There are also no close up images on the site. So how would buyers know what they would get?
