“If you’re taught the wrong history, you’ll draw the wrong conclusions.��

James Baldwin wasn’t speaking in metaphor. He was issuing a warning.

History is not just about the past. It shapes how people see themselves, how nations justify power, and how injustice becomes normal.

When Africa is taught only through slavery, colonization, coups, and poverty, a deadly lie takes root: that Black people have always needed saving. When Black children never learn of African empires, scientists, philosophers, queens, resistance movements, and global influence, confidence dies, vision shrinks, and dependency feels natural.

Miseducation doesn’t scream. It whispers, telling you who you are not before you discover who you could be.

Distorted history is more effective than chains. Chains can be broken; a poisoned mind often doesn’t know it’s trapped.

Colonial education was designed not to empower Africans but to produce obedience, self-doubt, and admiration for foreign dominance. After independence, many of these systems remained, rewriting African memory under the guise of “neutral” history.

The result: generations debate symptoms instead of causes, defend systems that never served them, and fight each other rather than the structures that shaped their thinking.

Baldwin understood: control the story, and you control the future.

Today’s fight is intellectual and historical—about reclaiming truth.
