Five police officers were shot dead in Mexico just hours before the 2026 World Cup opener
In a shocking incident, unknown armed attackers ambushed and killed five police officers in the state of Michoacán on the eve of the FIFA World Cup.
The officers were shot while on duty in the Nahuatzen area. The attackers opened heavy fire on their pickup truck, riddling it with dozens of bullets.
Nahuatzen is considered one of the most dangerous zones in Michoacán, with a strong presence of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
The brutal killings have cast a dark shadow over what was meant to be a day of celebration as the World Cup begins with the Mexico vs South Africa match.
