Today, the Government of The Bahamas announced a historic debt conversion project, the first of its kind for our nation. This innovative initiative refinances $300M in external debt through partnerships with the Inter-American Development Bank, The Nature Conservancy, and others, unlocking $124M in savings over the next 15 years. These savings will directly fund marine conservation efforts, including the protection of coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass meadows, ensuring the sustainability of our oceans and the livelihoods they support.
This project also establishes a $20M endowment to continue conservation work beyond its 15-year term. With guarantees and financing from global partners, The Bahamas is setting a precedent for climate resilience and sustainable development. This is a bold step forward in safeguarding our environment while strengthening our economy.
