eight months ago i muted my university friends' group chat.

it wasn't dramatic. there were 31 messages a day about a wedding i wasn't going to, and i was tired. i told myself i'd unmute it at the weekend.

it's now been eight months. every few weeks i see "99+" next to the name and feel a small stab of guilt. then i scroll past it.

last Saturday i bumped into one of them at a supermarket. she looked genuinely thrilled. she said, "oh my god, we missed you! we're so sorry you couldn't come."

i said, "come to what?"

she said, "the trip. the one in June. we asked you in the chat..."
