Unlike what the Western media and liberal academia would have you believe, the breakup of Yugoslavia was not about “ancient ethnic hatreds.” The real cause of collapse and eventual war was economic intervention by the IMF and World Bank which eventually turned into geopolitical military intervention by NATO and the EU.

Yugoslav socialism under Josip Broz Tito was based on a very unique hybrid model of decentralized self-management by workers councils in terms of enterprise ownership and operation of business, Soviet-like central planning when it came to the national economic output and GDP, and elements of market socialism much like modern China and Vietnam. And its achievements were the same as the successes of ever historical communist state:

▪️ Free and universal healthcare and education

▪️ Low-cost housing

▪️ Elimination of illiteracy and increase of life expectancy

▪️ High standards of living and levels of employment

▪️ Industrialization and modernization

▪️ Yugoslav Partisans held a critical role in the defeat of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy after the SS slaughtered as many as 700,000 Serbs in collaboration with Ante Pavelic and the Croatian Ustase

▪️ Support for anti-colonial and populist liberation movements in the Global South from the Palestine Liberation Organization to the African National Congress to the Cuban Revolution

For the West, this was particularly dangerous because Yugoslavia was another example of a successful socialist state operating independently from control and enslavement by Wall Street and US-dominated financial institutions.
