Atheists who are born as Hindus but don't actively practice the religion are no different from millions of Christians who don't participate in any religious activity. They also celebrate their festivals in the same way as you do. Such an approach is vacuous for many reasons.

@docamitoph @AshokKhemka_IAS Thanks. You are raising a valid point. But the transport service provider would save on the TP insurance which they wouldn't be required to buy. Effectively (ignoring the complexity which I pointed elsewhere) the transport cost wouldn't increase.

If UST reserves cannot be sold in a crisis without making said crisis worse by threatening a debt spiral, then UST’s are no longer fit for purpose as FX reserves.

In contrast, earlier this year, gold reserves were sold easily & quickly & de-escalated the crisis.

1) It started May 7 - not July

Jantar Mantar protests did a world of good to India and Indians. It empowered students across states. It focussed on education as a need, a demand and a right that should be fought for. Indian students are done waiting. A wave of protests have hit UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, Maharashtra & Jharkhand etc.

In Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, about 1,500 students, Classes 6-12, staged a 6-hour sit-in at Sarvodaya Inter College. No fans, no library, no computer lab, unsafe drinking water, broken desks. Officials came calling within a day.

In Gays, Bihar, A government school with a broken hand pump, dead fans, shattered benches. Students protested and refused to speak to a junior official. They demanded the District Magistrate himself show up. He did.

In Jalore, Rajasthan, students locked the gates themselves, demanding teachers for grades 1-3 that simply weren’t there.

In Barmer’s Ramsar school, same story. Kids literally not being taught subjects due to staff shortages.

Across MP, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Similar walkouts reported. Same core demands echoing across states: functional fans, clean water, hygienic toilets, teachers actually in the classroom.

What Jantar Mantar protests achieved is exceptional. India is discussing education, faculty shortages, unfairness, paper leaks, lack of school infrastructure. None of these demands are unreasonable and the minimum a public school owes a child. The fact it took a viral sit in to get it fixed is the real story.

I only wish this continues. We should continue to bring student issues to the forefront. Empower them with coverage, conversations. This can’t be allowed to fade as a one week news cycle. Keep asking. Keep covering. About vacant teacher posts in your district? What happened to the school infrastructure budget? Tag your local officials.

The Indian Statistical Institute (founded 1931 by P.C. Mahalanobis) is not just another campus. It is one of India’s rare institutions that was built on scientific independence, not bureaucratic control. The ISI Act of 1959 recognised it as an Institution of National Importance while preserving its society-based, faculty-driven character.

The new Indian Statistical Institute Bill, 2026 proposes to scrap that framework. It converts ISI into a statutory body corporate, replaces the representative Council with a government-appointed Board of Governors, and significantly curtails the role of the Academic Council. Faculty and the Institute’s own statutory bodies have publicly said this was done with zero meaningful consultation with them.

The government’s pitch is “modernisation” and alignment with IIT/IIM-style governance. Critics inside ISI argue the opposite: it concentrates power, reduces elected academic voice, and opens the door to external interference in academic decisions. They also note that the 4th Review Committee (Mashelkar) did not recommend repealing the 1959 Act or abolishing the Society structure.

This is not an abstract governance debate. Institutions that produce independent data, rigorous statistical research, and critical inquiry need structural insulation from short-term political or bureaucratic priorities. Once that insulation is thinned, it is hard to restore.
Academic freedom is not a slogan. It is the operating condition of any serious research institute. ISI faculty are right to raise the alarm.

Parliament should insist on genuine consultation with the Institute’s own bodies before rewriting a 95-year-old model that actually worked. Another Premier Institute being Saffronised and being brought under RSS Siege.

Just spoke to someone who is taking his insurer to court over unending price hikes in health insurance,

He bought 50 L floater health insurance for parents for Rs. 60K in 2011.

In 2026, the premium shot up to an absurd 5 Lakhs (Father: 71, Mother: 70)

That jump came through back to back hikes of 54% and 12% (net of zero GST) in two consecutive years.

He can still afford it. That's not the point.
He wants the court to answer HOW FAR THESE HIKES CAN GO?

Told him he is doing public service for lakhs of senior citizens in India affected by this.
