Senior author Vaughan Macefield @MonashSTM@BakerResearchAu says this work provides proof of principle that the electrical activity of vagal neurones with cardiac function can be directly studied in humans. “Because the activity of these neurones is likely altered in cardiovascular disease, it is crucial to understand how and why.” Professor Macefield said. “This technique will enable these investigations.”

"The vagus is part of our parasympathetic nervous network: it calms and soothes the organs, dulls inflammation, stands down our immune armies".
So writes @liammannix@theage, on this "cable" linking the gut, brain and immune system.
@STMneurosci researchers @AceOfDaves and @vgmacefield led the first team in the world to record vagus nerve signals in humans. They've now isolated the electrical activity of individual neurones responsible for cardiovascular regulation.
David Farmer spoke with Liam, and told @abcnews:
"It's becoming very popular in medical science to stimulate this nerve, particularly in conditions like #Epilepsy and treatment-resistant #Depression.
"There's also the possibility of stimulating the nerve to target these cardiovascular neurons that control the heart to improve outcomes in cardiovascular disease."

This is so savage.
@sussanley Frankston is full of emigres from the UK. It’s little Liverpool out there. Sone of them are even law abiding and lead productive lives. Is that who you’re talking about?
Even the most brilliant discoveries can get lost in the complicated process of translating lab results into everyday medical treatments.
We offer graduate and research programs in Clinical Research & #TranslationalMedicine — the first of their kind in Australia.

@david_latona David can you please use the correct term in your coverage - agresión sexual does not translate as sexual aggression - it’s sexual assault.
The brain's size, curves and grooves may play an important role in its function, perhaps even more than the connections between neurons, research suggests. https://t.co/oMJKWQrAAy
