I was really afraid of the US ruining what the #WorldCup has been and stands for, for so many of us around the world.
I even thought it was a mistake to take an event about Union among nations to such a proudly divided country.
But now I believe that actually the World Cup is a blessing in disguise and couldn’t have come to the US in a more appropriate moment.
And not just for the real people in US but for us all overseas as well.
It might be a healing experience in how the real people of the US see the rest of the world, how the world sees the real people of the U.S., and an opportunity for the real Americans to see themselves for what they really are, and not for what the divisive politics vitriol paint them as.
Specially in the social media era, the World Cup might be a game changer in the perception we all the REAL people have of each other, and now I’m really excited and hopeful that the World Cup might have a positive impact, and hopefully a long lasting one.
Seeing all these videos and stories of tourists and US citizens having fun together, helping each other and being nice to each other, humanises the way we all see each other. The ones coming from middle America are the ones which fascinated me the most.
Rather than parties, organizations, movements, in the end of the day we are in the vast majority just REAL people trying to live our lives the best we can. Almost no one wakes up in the morning wishing to be evil, let alone wishing to be a threat to someone else.
And we desperately need to highlight that again and remember that we are better than the elites in power, the ones always doing whatever they can to divide us and make us fear each other.
Scotsmen in kilts playing the bagpipes at 6am in Boston. The residents of Lawrence, Kansas learning the Algerian national anthem and crowding every practice, South Korean supporters sharing their tequila with Mexican fans before the match, Brazilians taking over Times Square. Bosnian and Canadian fans high fiving before their big match.
The World Cup is humanity's biggest party, and continually reminds us of how amazing we can be!
Usually I tune out for image generation stuff but not gonna lie this one "Spatial reframing" feature was kinda sick: You can preview the effect in realtime, and the blur is what’s filled in later by the generative models. This is a good, tasteful use of image generation models. Works with any photos in your library, even older ones. Very interested to test it.
While there was nothing revolutionary, Apple just rebooted the foundation of its platforms with functional AI, a working Siri and improved performance. This is critical ahead of the next three years of blockbuster new devices that run these operating systems. The right move.
* Important: SK hynix has no plans to add any new NAND flash capacity.
=> The only players that will add new capacity are pure-play NAND manufacturers, YMTC, and Kioxia.
- This refutes the previous rumor that SK hynix would add NAND capacity at a new greenfield fab.
- The biggest beneficiary should be Kioxia, which has a greenfield site available for new capacity expansion. Kioxia’s market share is likely to increase.
What exactly does Sally Choi want here?
The OBSESSION art director/set decorator says she made $300 a day and less than $7,000 total on the film, which is now heading toward a massive box office run.
I get why that stings.
But OBSESSION was a $750,000 indie movie. Nobody knew this thing was going to blow up. Nobody was working on a guaranteed studio hit.
That is how indie films work.
People wear multiple hats. People take lower rates. People gamble on the credit, the experience, the relationships, and the hope that the movie becomes something bigger.
This one did.
And yes, it sucks when a movie explodes and the below-the-line crew does not share in that upside.
But who is supposed to cut the check now?
Curry Barker? Focus Features? The producers? The distributor that bought the movie after it was already made?
If the ask is backend for indie crews after acquisition, say that.
If it is bonus pools, say that.
If it is better minimums, say that.
But vague “we need to turn this industry around” posting without a clear ask can backfire fast.
She did good work.
She should use OBSESSION to get better-paying jobs immediately, because that is usually how this business works.
But everyone on that movie was gambling.
The difference is the gamble actually paid off.
