Iran have to be the unluckiest team in this tournament. Their nightmare began before the competition even started when they were denied visas to enter the USA, forcing them to set up their training camp in Mexico instead.
Then came the heartbreak on the pitch. In their final group match against Egypt, the score was 1-1 until the 90th minute when Iran thought they had found the winner. The players celebrated wildly, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after a review, leaving their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
Today, they needed Algeria to beat Austria to stay alive. In the 95th minute, Riyad Mahrez made it 3-2 for Algeria, reigniting Iranian hopes. But just one minute later, Austria equalized, crushing those dreams in the cruelest way possible.
From visa troubles to last-minute heartbreak, it has been a brutally unfair tournament for Iran. Football can be unbelievably cruel.
@TouchlineX Funny enough how Tunisia is the only African team that was eliminated at group stage, it's just an indication that an African team will win it at the end.
