What do we do in World Studies on the Thursday before a break? We write five-paragraph essays from memory on China’s One-Child Policy—Rosenshine P8: a challenging task, scaffolded with sentence starters, outline, and offloading. This is where their long-term memory can shine. 👇
More learning can be fun!!! My students favorite retrieval strategy is Cops and Robbers (Credit to @KateJones_teach). Brain dump everything you know about a concept (👮♂️). Go steal new information you didn’t recall from peers (Robbers). I recommend enhancing with theme music. 😉
If you need a Christmas resource for a lesson over the coming weeks, these may be handy. Lots of festive puzzles and some quizzes too. None are mine but gathered over the years. Hope you find them useful 🎅🎄

***1% BETTER***
Improving attendance is a key focus for all schools right now.
For students in the 90–95% attendance range, we’ve launched our “1% Better” strategy. Each identified student receives a card and is paired with a key adult in the school.
Students get their card signed for every consecutive day they attend, and after 12 days they earn a prize 😊

Do you run Halloween practicals at your school too? 👻
It is that time of year again! Teaching the benefits of amniotic fluid using an egg and a lunch box. First fill it with water and shake. The egg won’t crack showing protection & shock absorber. Then pour out the water and show the difference without the amniotic fluid #jcscience
I wrote this blog to share quick tips that reduce cognitive load and save time for new teachers.
9 things I wish I’d known as an ECT and hopefully there’s something useful here for middle & senior leaders too.
