Sex-based differences in head impacts during law enforcement training may hold important implications for cadet safety.
Researchers examined how sex differences influence head acceleration events (HAEs) during subject control training for 82 civilian law enforcement cadets. Using instrumented mouthguards, they found that female cadets experienced slightly lower peak linear acceleration than males, but there were no significant differences in the number of HAEs or rotational velocity. These findings suggest current training practices โ like pairing cadets by sex or skill level โ may help minimize risk, particularly for female participants.
Identifying subtle differences in head impact exposure can inform safer, evidence-based training protocols for all cadets.
