A Sony estaria reconsiderando seus planos de abandonar gradualmente os jogos físicos no PlayStation devido a uma suposta estratégia da Microsoft para tornar o próximo Xbox, o Project Helix, “100% físico”, com possibilidade de converter jogos físicos para digitais, sistema que já está sendo implementado pela Microsoft a partir de 31 de agosto.

Esses rumores foram citados em um Podcast da Eurogamer Spain, na sua cobertura da Gamescom, ainda dizem que uma grande publisher teria ameaçado não lançar um dos seus grandes próximos lançamentos para o PlayStation, e focar somente no Nintendo Switch e XBOX, não revelaram o nome mas alguns fãs suponhem que poderia ser a CD Projekt, que já confirmou que vai lançar The Witcher 4 com uma edição Mídia Física com brindes, com ou sem discos, pois essa parte não depende deles e sim da Sony.

Ainda segundo os Rumores, o prazo para o fim dos lançamentos físicos (12/2028) poderia ser adiado em um ou dois anos.

A preocupação da Sony seria perder o apoio de jogadores e desenvolvedoras que ainda preferem mídias físicas. O rumor também afirma que uma grande desenvolvedora teria ameaçado não lançar um de seus próximos grandes jogos no PlayStation caso não houvesse uma versão física.
