Kenya is East Africa’s largest furniture market, valued at approximately $452 million. The government’s Affordable Housing Project, which aims to deliver 250,000 housing units annually, presents a transformative opportunity to strengthen local manufacturing through the preferential procurement of locally produced goods. By embedding local sourcing into the project’s framework, Kenya can simultaneously address housing needs and catalyze industrial growth.
The Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Timber, Wood and Furniture Sector recently convened a meeting with officials from the State Department of Housing to explore collaboration on integrating locally manufactured furniture and wood products into the Affordable Housing Project.
During the meeting, Sector Chair Kaberia Kamencu urged government to source from Kenyan manufacturers to drive industrial expansion and economic resilience, saying, “Kenya stands as the largest furniture market in East Africa with a production value of $452 million. Sourcing from local producers could generate up to 60% more direct manufacturing jobs and an additional 20% in logistics and distribution, creating a multiplier effect across the economy.”
He further stated that Kenya’s forest cover has expanded, and this means that there is an adequate supply of Cypress, Pine and Eucalyptus trees because of the ongoing sustainable forest management. Local sourcing would support the national tree-planting initiatives while providing high-grade timber for industrial use.
Officials from the Affordable Housing Project highlighted their intention to promote 100% local sourcing of any products available locally. The immediate products required included doors and frames, which the sector indicated capacity to manufacture and supply in full.
The sector showcased its robust capacity to supply a diverse range of wood-based products, including boards for cabinetry, integrated kitchens, and furniture. This demonstrated readiness underscores the ability of Kenyan manufacturers to meet both quality and volume requirements for the housing initiative.
Beyond job creation, local sourcing offers a range of strategic benefits that extend into broader economic and social development. By strengthening domestic industries, Kenya reduces reliance on imports and ensures that capital continues to circulate within the local economy, fostering economic empowerment.
