US imports from China—$51.5B smartphones, $36.7B computers, $18.1B batteries, $14.4B toys. Things Americans buy at Target.
China imports from the US—$14B petroleum gases, $12B soybeans, $11.8B semiconductors, $6.6B jet engines. Things that keep an industrial economy running.
The energy number nobody talks about—$14B of US gas is 16% of China’s total gas imports. You can’t pivot your energy supply chain in a quarter.
China has leverage on what shows up under the Christmas tree. The US has leverage on what keeps the lights on.
One side is negotiating over consumer electronics. The other is negotiating over industrial survival.
That is not a symmetrical negotiation at all…
