As a life long conservative who has been bitching about the left since I was about ten years old I am wondering about some things.

Ten is a bit young for political decisions, but I have gone on to study politics for five years, constantly evaluating my position, and having been at left wing schools and universities at the time I was also robustly challenged (the 90s allowed us to debate and have our own opinions, shocking I know).

I have read every manifesto, from every local candidate before voting. Every party manifesto at every election to see what I most approve of.

And I wonder…

- How many people actually do this? How many people really question what is on offer?

- How many have any understanding of all the proposals from parties vs their stance on one or two of the voter’s pet issues?
Of the newer conservatives who previously voted for left wing parties, what made you change your position?

- How many of us saw this all coming years ago and got shouted down, called names and have been struggling to make people understand all this time?

- How many of the newer conservatives were amongst those calling myself and other Brexit voters gammons ten years ago? Be honest, it’s okay…but do you see why we were posting those “FUCK OFF WE’RE FULL” memes now?

And finally, because I’m exhausted of seeing men say it’s all the fault of women that we are in this horrendous catastrophe now, what has been the split between men and women?

I despise the white liberal woman trope as much as anyone else. But also the liberal males. Of which there are many. And at the moment, it is women and children who are under the most threat from things that didn’t used to be normalised, and the results of mass, uncontrolled, illegal immigration.

That last part has, from observation, increased the amount of women moving to the right. So suggesting we shouldn’t vote is counter productive. What is needed is an awakening amongst the liberal left, regardless of sex. For all of our sakes.

Written from a British perspective with wider implications. I grew up under a female Prime Minister, something no American has experienced. One of our strongest leaders ever. Perhaps that’s why I see so many US men unable to see women as capable of voting, let alone standing for election.

Politicians, as with any other role, should be in their positions based on merit. And that alone. I have said that since I was a kid. And I long for the years I grew up in and started working in, for the country I loved. And still love, but we need a huge amount of effort to fix it.
