The oldest known photo in Texas history. Taken in 1849, the Alamo Mission as it appeared 13 years after the infamous battle that saw the deaths of James Bowie, Davy Crockett and William Travis.

The Alamo Mission was originally established as a Spanish mission in the early 18th century and became famous during the Battle of the Alamo. From February 23 to March 6, 1836, a small Texian garrison defended the mission against a much larger Mexican army led by Antonio López de Santa Anna. After a 13-day siege, the defenders were overwhelmed, and nearly all were killed.

The battle became a rallying cry for the Texas Revolution. Just six weeks later, Texian forces under Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, securing Texas independence.

By 1849, when this photograph was taken, the Alamo had already become a symbol of Texas identity. The structure looked markedly different from its modern appearance, as the iconic curved parapet above the chapel façade had not yet been added. That feature was constructed later in the 1850s by the U.S. Army.

This photograph was taken only 10 years after the invention of practical photography and just 13 years after the battle itself. Some people who fought at the Alamo, survived the Texas Revolution, or personally knew Davy Crockett and William Travis were still alive when this image was captured, creating a remarkably short link between the historic event and the dawn of photography.

Mitch Johnson didn’t mince words after Game 1.

He said the Spurs need to do a much better job of getting Victor Wembanyama into the paint and attacking the rim, emphasizing an inside-out approach offensively.

The Spurs are giving up to 1,000 tickets during the Finals to local nonprofits serving youth across San Antonio. It allows opportunities for young people and families who may not otherwise have the chance to attend a Spurs game. This is not new. this season alone they gave away 22,000 tickets to community organizations.
