I have said many times that President Ruto and the teleprompter are not good friends.

To the uninitiated, a teleprompter is a device that displays a speech or script for a speaker to read while appearing to maintain eye contact with the audience. It is the system the President often uses during national events, such as today's Madaraka Day address.

His communication handlers may fear telling him openly, but every time the President addresses the nation via a teleprompter, I get the feeling of a man speaking to trees deep in a forest. The speech sounds unnatural, passionless, and disconnected from the audience. His delivery style is clearly not suited to the teleprompter.

When he speaks extemporaneously or engages directly with people, his communication is often far more animated and effective. But once he is tied to the scrolling text, something seems to get lost between the words and the audience.
