Worse than all of that, I realized that I was in a very similar situation that my father had been in when he chose to leave us. He was married to my mom, had one son already, and was expecting another (me) when fears of financial strain led him to choose to abandon his family.  He left before I was born, and I’ve never even met him. There I was, a man haunted by the fear of becoming like his father, standing in the very position that made him a ghost. It felt like fate. Was I doomed to repeat the cycle?

It has been just under five years that we have walked alongside a young woman as she has navigated life without the steady presence of her father. During this time, we have watched her grow, share milestones, and find emotional stability in a community where she felt safe enough to share the truth of her story. 

In very subtle but clear ways, she expressed the hope for reconciliation with her father. She believed in the few-and-far-between moments of sobriety that he would recognize his daughter’s need for him. But, his death last year ended that hope.

Having a mother and father in the home is the single biggest indicator for success in a child’s life. All the more reason we work so hard to teach the young people we serve that they are not their fatherlessness and that the families they will have one day never have to know what a fatherless home is, if the despair of their father’s absence ends with them. They get to decide. And, we get to equip them and let them know that they have a choice, as hard it is to make, to end the destructive cycle of fatherlessness.

He hugged him.

The message was clear. Uncle Phil was there to console him. He was there to love him, to teach him, to support him—to mentor him. He was there for Will.
