I watched Netflix’s new Ray Gunn movie last night.
Brad Bird just has the ambitious, magic touch. It started a bit slow, being carried by some humorous bits and creativity reminiscent of Monsters Inc. with character designs that sometimes felt Nintendo-like in their creativity and unique appearances.
Once the story and extremely rich world are established, the movie is super engaging and creative. Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson do a great job voicing their characters but the true winner of the movie is the fearlessly creative animation and design.
For me, it might not be an instant classic to the tier of Bird’s The Incredibles but I find it to be a compliment that I am even debating such a comparison. There’s a lot of originality here that works really well and reminded me of what I loved in Pixar and Disney animated films from the early 2000s, in some ways. There were a few ideas and elements that could’ve been more fleshed out to fully realize the world Ray Gunn takes us to but even the elements which don’t seem to have fully reached that potential are still great at the degree to which they are delivered.
It’s a very good movie. Lots of fun. One parents can watch with kids over the holidays and enjoy while the kids enjoy it, too. I really dug it.
Have you heard about Ray Gunn yet?
