A lot of menswear today is boring because a lot of companies run by people with no technical skills. 175 years ago, menswear was made by bespoke tailors. The rise of industrial manufacturing and ready-to-wear split that role into designer, pattern maker, and sewer. Today, we have a lot of micro brands are run by people who are not tailors, designers, pattern makers, or sewers. They simply send a pair of chinos or an Oxford shirt to a factory and ask for modest changes (e.g., "make this fuller/ slimmer"). Thus, endless copies of essentially the same thing, differing only in branding and marketing.
