As the 2024 session wraps, lawmakers worked hard on the issue of Medicaid.
However, agreements could not be made, leaving much on the table for next year.

@BrandonPresley@supertalk@magnoliatribune Thank you for the kind words! It’s been a good run since those early days on the radio. I hope to stay in touch with everyone!
I hate to see @_SarahUlmer_ leave the Capitol Press Corps, but I’m excited for her as she starts a new chapter of her life. It may hurt or help my reputation for people to know we are actually good friends and keep each other informed with what’s happening at the Capitol.
Did you know that the proceeds from the popular black out tags go directly into a fund for families of fallen first responders who were killed in the line of duty?
Well, those tags have done so well lawmakers were able to increase that death benefit substantially. #msleg
Lawmakers have moved to increase death benefits for families of law enforcement officers and firefighters killed in the line of duty.
This change comes after the success of the "black out tags," whose proceeds go to the death benefit fund. #msleg

It really is the end of an era.
Pretty honored to be recognized by the Senate in what might be the funniest story of my life.
I may be able to throw a ball...but that doesn't mean I can hit the target. #IYKYK#msleg@DavidParkerSen, @SenatorJohnPolk, Sen. Neil Whaley
Know those new-ish black car tags you can get in Mississippi? The proceeds go to death benefits for families of law enforcement officers or fire fighters.
They’ve generated over $7.5 million.
Senate passes SB 2487 which will increase that benefit to $250k #msleg
@KevinBlackwell5 Blackwell went on to say that just this morning he had spoken with a reliable source who indicated CMS would not have dismissed Mississippi’s request outright.
He said that same information was communicated with the House. #msleg
LTG. Hosemann issued a statement after the surprise referendum offer from the House on Medicaid expansion. In that statement he indicated the idea was not well received by Senators. #msleg
UPDATE: Lt. Gov. Hosemann now says Speaker White’s Medicaid expansion referendum proposal was not well received by Senators. Article below updated with Hosemann’s statement->

Senate Medicaid Chairman @KevinBlackwell5 relayed a comment regarding tonight’s back and forth on the Medicaid expansion proposal.
The quote is long, but it is below:
“Just speaking for myself and my conferees disappointed as we put a lot of work and a lot of effort into advancing healthcare coverage for the working poor.
We would’ve liked to have seen this advance, but the house Democrats thought differently. It’s absolutely amazing that for the first time since 2010 not only did we have a discussion but both houses were moving forward. And without the support of the house democrats We just ended up back on the porch. Unbelievable!
And here is the irony. To have coverage on the exchange right now you have to have a job. Again, very disappointed and sad for those who are working and trying hard to move up the ladder.” #msleg
JUST NOW: LTG @DelbertHosemann responds to the recent proposal from Speaker @JasonWhiteMS.
Based on his comment, it would indicate the idea of a referendum was not well received by Senators in discussions earlier today. #msleg
Speaker White calls for statewide referendum on Medicaid expansion. #msleg
After House Democrats balked at the compromise with the Senate, Republican Speaker Jason White offered the new proposal with one day left to negotiate.
