This morning at my local shopping centre, barely a kilometre or so from where Chaiwali was robbed, businesses have begun taking extra precautions. There is a growing sense of fear amongst residents and the businesses operating there as crime continues to increase in our area.
What makes this even more concerning is that Spring Valley Police Station is very close to both the shopping centre and the establishment that was robbed, and only a stone’s throw from where I live. Even so, they shut their gates at a certain hour, and as residents we have also been advised to be extra cautious.
This is where we are today. You work hard, pay your taxes, contribute to building your nation, and all you ask for in return is safety, peace of mind, and basic services that every taxpayer should be able to expect. Unfortunately, many of us are now living in fear instead.
I have always said that many residents in the parts of Nairobi that are often ignored or dismissed as “informal” or “low-end” have been living with this reality for a long time. Sadly, instead of addressing it, we are regressing. Crime and insecurity do not discriminate, and if this trend continues, nobody will be spared.
The sad reality is that today, it no longer matters which neighbourhood you live in. Safety is no longer guaranteed. No one, and nowhere, feels truly safe anymore.
It is what it is.

Perhaps we think that changing Kenya is one big massive event. Maybe Kenya will change when the value of life stops being hierarchical. When the sanctity of life is absolute. When Ghetto lives become dignified just like the dignitaries.
Please help us find Kiarie. #FreeKiarie
