I really wanted to like Supergirl. After seeing the trailers, I was worried, but I still held onto hope that they weren't showing the final cut. Sadly, that wasn't the case.

The story felt a little soulless. I could see what they were trying to do, but I never felt anything that made me connect with it. Even the whole storyline with the swordsman's family getting wiped out and the daughter seeking revenge had no emotional weight behind it. That pretty much carried through the entire movie.

The whole Krypto needing to be saved storyline also felt emotionless. Superman almost felt like he was thrown in as a side quest, and if anything, he ended up stealing the energy that Supergirl was supposed to be building.

Then there's Lobo. We've been waiting years to see him on screen, and it just felt like a wasted opportunity. Instead of making him feel like the larger-than-life character he is, they turned him into more of a joke.

Visually, I couldn't get over how green-screened so many scenes looked, especially during the fight sequences.

Looking at the movie as a whole, it felt like the director was trying to recreate the style and feel of the previous Superman film and James Gunn's filmmaking, but for me it just didn't land. Even some of the music choices felt like they were trying too hard to capture that same vibe.

I still think Supergirl can work, and I actually think she'll thrive more in a team up setting. But as a standalone movie, this really didn't do much for the character.
