"Ain't No Mountain High Enough" was the first released duet by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the song was recorded with their vocals separately: Tammi recorded her part first while Marvin added his vocals afterwards. Despite never actually singing the song together in the studio, their performances have such remarkable chemistry that it sounds as if they were standing side by side.

A few months after the song's release, Tammi collapsed on stage into Marvin's arms during a performance at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. She was subsequently diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. Her illness deeply affected Marvin, and the pair's recording partnership was eventually brought to an end by her declining health. Tammi Terrell died in March 1970 at the age of 24.
